What majors are these two known for? Also, are their computer science programs good or high ranking?

Both quite good for cs. Another nearby college with a reputable cs dept is Holy Cross.

Boston College is known for a top-of-the-line liberal arts and business schools. Political science, languages and religious courses are very well respected. They have a top notch business school and a great law school.

Boston University is known more for its communications and general studies programs. The business school is good, though not as good as BC or nearby Northeastern. The same can be said of their computer science programs. BU has engineering, which BC does not. BU also has decent bio and pre-med programs.

Regarding Computer science specifically, Boston is known for their computer science schools. A Harvard student created Facebook while attending the school. A Northeastern University student created Napster while attending the school (Mark Fanning later became a co-owner of Facebook as well as the founder of Napster). Together with MIT, these are the three schools known for computer sience in Boston/New England. They provide some of the best computer science programs in the country.

Holy Cross is not particularly near Boston and has a very weak computer science program (only ~2 professors devoted to CS) even for a LAC. What is it with the Holy Cross spam on CC?

I would add music, theatre, and archaeology to the programs BU is known for.

If I want to major in computer science, which of the two should I choose, or another one in the nearby area (besides MIT and Harvard)?

Northeastern University;

Might look at Tufts and Holy Cross both strong schools with better alumni networks.

I was waiting for Par 72 to jump in ■■■■■■■■ for Holy Cross, the BC safety school way out in the boonies of Worcester. lol.

HC and BC are not known for having strong CS programs, to the extent they even have one. The schools you want for CS in Boston are Harvard, MIT, Northeastern and maybe BU. I don’t know much about Tufts and whether they have a program. It is a good school though.

These are graduate school rankings, and the OP is looking at undergrad. hffighter, to get back to the original question - BU is known for having pretty good communications, linguistics, math, and management programs. BC is known for its law/pre-law, political science, and its school of management as well. For computer science specifically, MIT, UMass Amherst, and Tufts are all Boston schools that have better comp sci programs than BC or BU.

^Fail. UMass ■■■■■■■■?

UMass is 1) not a boston school; 2) has a horrible CS program; and 3) is only a good option if you can’t afford the big boston schools (Harvard, MIT, Tufts, BC, BU, Northeastern).

UMass Amherst a Boston school? LOL, I guess they don’t have a very good geography department.

I was a math major and cs minor at Holy Cross and ended up working at Microsoft in Seattle for 11 years in product development in the Windows group and other areas including an overseas assignment in the UK. Needless to say it has been financially rewarding.

Well, Naviance data from our HS shows that Holy Cross is not a safety for anyone unless they have over 1380 SAT and over 3.8 GPA. It’s essentially the same cut offs as BC.

I have to agree though, that after a while, seeing a certain poster always recommending HC without even seeming to read the OP’s question actually takes away credibility in such advice.

I see nothing wrong in pointing out that UMass-Amherst is strong in EE and CS, since the OP here asked for “nearby area” to BU and BC. And if we’re talking Worcester, there’s Worcester Polytech (WPI), a full fledged engineering and technology school for CS.

I will suggest one more school for CS - Wentworth Institute of Technology. It’s in Boston, right next to Northeastern. It has paid Co-ops, takes 4 years and 1 summer to complete, has low-cost tuition, merit scholarships, and its graduates get nice paying jobs. And it would be considered a safety in relation to all the other schools mentioned above.

If someone wanted a major in, say, Chemistry or Math… would BU be a decent choice between these two? I always picture BC as being verrrry liberal arts-y

Tufts has a good engineering school and offers computer science major in arts/science and engineering schools. Holy Cross has great pre-med and pre-law, BU has good journalism program while BC has good nursing and education programs. Boston business journal recently published list of Massachusetts companies CEO’s alma maters-Tufts, Holy Cross and Babson are highly represented as well as MIT.

I have a 2300+ SAT score, 750+ and 800’s for math and science scores (SAT II’s) and a handful of extracurriculars with positions. What would be good schools in OR near the Boston area (well, mostly, anywhere in Massachusetts since I live in-state) for my level for a computer science major? Basically, I’m looking for the “UC Berkeley (in California)” in Massachusetts.

Again, I’m disregarding Harvard and MIT because those schools are difficult to predict.

Worcester Polytechnic Institute is arguably the state’s second most prestigious engineering school after MIT.

^Fail WPI ■■■■■■■■.

You’d have to visit. BC is pretty liberal arts focused. Tufts and Northeastern might be better for Chem and hard science programs than BU or BC.

I don’t go to UMass. I go to school in Medford, you can figure it out. And it does have a good CS program and is near Boston. Just offering some more options, that’s all.
