Boston College Class of 2012

From Boston College’s website

"Selecting the Class

Admission to Boston College has become increasingly competitive as more students with superior academic records, intellectual curiosity, and scholarly promise continue to apply. For the class of 2012, there were over 30,000 applications for 2,250 places in the four undergraduate divisions.

Although no minimum test score or class rank has been established, the Committee on Admission pays particular attention to students who have performed well in a demanding college preparatory curriculum, especially one that involves honors and AP courses. The Undergraduate Admission Office recommends that students pursue four years of coursework in English, social science, mathematics, foreign language, and laboratory science. Coursework completed in 8th grade will not be considered.

The majority of incoming freshmen to the University have achieved consistently high grades in their secondary schools and rank comfortably within the top 10 percent of their graduating classes. Competitive standardized test scores also have a bearing on the selection process. The test scores for the middle half of the class of 2012 ranged from 1950 to 2220 on the SAT I, and 30 to 33 on the ACT.

In selecting students, the Committee on Admission looks for demonstrated evidence of academic ability, intellectual curiosity, strength of character, motivation, creativity, energy, and promise for personal growth and development. The Committee also carefully considers recommendations by counselors and teachers, the required personal statement and extracurricular activities. Requests for financial aid do not affect decisions on admission."

Doesn’t the SAT and ACT seem a bit high?

based on the students i know who are attending, that seems on par.

im joining the class of 2012, and granted i got accepted to the honors program, but my stats are basically on par with those. 32 on ACT and 2250 on SATs

Dear nesh1080 : Boston College was just ranked at eleventh in a recent poll of the nation's universities - eleventh. This is a school that is making a serious ACADEMIC move to the top echelon schools on the back prior sports successes. The midpoint moved radically this year for the BC applicant pool and you can expect another upward move for the Class of 2013.

I'm not calling it a false claim...it's just that I only had mid 2100's and got honors which means I would fall in the top 5% of the applicant pool. (nothing else about me is really that spectacular lol)

scottj, can you post a link that has BC ranked 11th? id be curious to read more about it

Testings are not necessary the sole indicator of a high quality students. When you get up to the 2100-2200, it might be a few questions on the SAT that separate the two. For the Honors Program, testing is just one of many requirements: "high-school achievement, aptitude test scores, teacher recommendations, and the content and quality of application essays and other writing samples." Your teacher recommendations might have indicated you as an exceptional curious individual or your essays might have touched your readers.

BC was ranked 11th on a list from Forbes magazine
How to Choose a College - Forbes.com
i'd read the accompanying article describing the list as well
How to Choose a College - Forbes.com

this ranking utilized many of the aspects used in the USNWR rankings, as well as things such as ratemyproffesor.com, Who's who in America, etc. it's imperfect, but it is interesting

in my opinion, the USNWR is fairly accurate in determining how difficult it is to be admitted to a school, while this new list is good at depicting overall quality.

and i got in with a 32 and i was around top 20 % in my class, except senior year i became around top 3%
