Morrissey College of Arts and Sciences

OBJECTIVE:

SAT 1- 1430
GPA- Weighted 4.1, Unweighted I never got to see but estimate ~3.8
RANK- My school is funky with rank, but probably top 10-15%
AP- World (4) APUSH (5),
Senior Course Load- 4 APā€™s (Psych, Calc AB, Gov, Lit), Honors Adv. Latin, and a 1 semester non-honors science course
AWARDS- National Honor Society, a couple leadership awards for clubs. Nothing too fancy.

SUBJECTIVE-

Extracurriculars- Theater for 4 years, 11 shows (1 show as director, which I think stands out a fair bit)
Choir for 4 years, (3 years as board member)
Speech team for 2 years.
This sounds SUPER dumb, but Iā€™m in a band. And weā€™ve played at tons of local arts festivals and earth day festivals and peace rallies and done a lot to support the up-and-coming cultural district of my town, so that sort of independent achievement ended up carrying some significant weight on my app and in my recommendations. Never would have expected it though.

Job/Work Experience: Retail for 2 years, 2 summers as a residential camp counselor

Volunteer/Community service: literally thousands of hours logged with my church doing church-y things like soup kitchens and homeless shelters and shoveling my Ministerā€™s driveway. Serve on my churchā€™s Religious Ed committee, helped design the curriculum for UU churches in Metro-Boston. About a thousand hours as a volunteer at an overnight summer camp. Extraneous Natā€™l Honor Society stuff, like Relay for Life or running some 5Kā€™s.

Summer Activities: Camp Counselor, 8-weeks. Mix of volunteer and work.

Essays: My BC one was def like a 8 or 9, just because I was able to really work into the Jesuit prompt with my church experience and the kind of challenging, hands-on academics I drift towards. It was cheesy, but I definitely meant what I wrote.

Personal Essay Iā€™d give a 7 or 8, it was about how when I was working as a counselor, I learned the value of ā€œbeing ridiculousā€, and basically how reminding yourself that itā€™s ok to play, and use your imagination and be expressive can help you deal with the day-to-day. It was a pretty mundane subject but I think the tone was fresh enough.

Teacher Recommendation: 9 or 10/10, I imagine. My Latin teacher, with whom Iā€™ve had 5 classes over 4 years AND who attends my church, knows me really well as a student and a kid.

Counselor Rec: 7/10 Probably not special. She has like 110 kids, so Iā€™m sure it was ā€œhe is a great student, very responsible, blah blah.ā€ The only kick was that I fought against the school committee sophomore year to get my Latin II class back, since not enough kids signed up, and she said she was gonna add that in there.

Additional Rec: N/A
Interview: N/A
Other: N/A

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yeah but LOL not with the bracket Iā€™m in.
Intended Major: I put psychology on the app, but Iā€™m now leaning towards History.
State (if domestic applicant): MA
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: 200k-300k
Hooks: Legacy, pretty religiously involved (though VERY liberal and not Catholic)

Iā€™m just ecstatic to be in, this was my first real tough-shot school, and I fell in love with it the minute I stepped on campus. Chances are Iā€™ll end up here, so I hope to see you guys in September!
