I recently received my financial aid package from Boston College. It was very generous ($47k out of $63k cost of attendance), but my family would still be unable to afford it as the remaining cost is an immense burden as our income is around $20k. Would my mom’s being out of work since the beginning of this year be a good reason to appeal to the financial aid office for a little more aid?

I apologize for the double-posting, but do we only need to fill out the appeal form? Or do we also have to write a letter?

yes, that is a good reason to appeal. Just complete the appeal form.

But be advised that the primary factor in your EFC is last year’s income. Most/all colleges will assume that your mom will be able to find work (hopefully). But if she is out of work a lot this year, your 2014 family income will be lower, so aid could go up in your second year.

I just went through this same process like a week ago with BC. My dad lost his job at the end of last year so I appealed my aid package. He basically sent in the form which asks about what you expect your income to be this year and stuff like that and then he also sent in copies of the official letter from his company about him losing his job and a little letter explaining things. This increased my aid by $25,000 so definitely appeal!

Unsuccessful aid appeal for me. We weren’t sure if BC had received new documents that changed some circumstances but they had. Still a very generous offer.
