Boston College Liberal Arts Core

Hello, I was wondering how Boston College has such a good business school despite having a lot of liberal arts requirements? Doesn’t that mean less time is spent on business curriculum?

Any accredited business school will have a liberal arts core. Psychology, math, sociology and economics underly all business studies. Business schools are not vo-tech schools.

The core is a great way to help develop your world view. You’ll become a more interesting human which is very important in business. The areas of study outlined by @TomSrOfBoston will help you address critical business decisions. It’s not just about could, but rather should and exploring alternatives.

My son is in the Carrell School and took the Pulse program service/theology/philosophy. Well worth it, look online for the info. He also had psychology class along with business courses.

*Carroll School at BC, he would want my spelling corrected!

Steve Carrell didn’t attend BC. But Amy Poehler did. Lol.

My S went to the b-school of a different Jesuit university and I imagine he had a similar liberal arts core.

It does not mean one takes fewer business courses, it does likely mean you will have fewer free electives.

The liberal arts core for b-school students is typically somewhat modified to make space for the business coursework (for example my S as a b-school student didn’t need to take foreign language).

My S probably wished he had a few less core classes BUT I can say that when he left college he had BOTH a strong and well rounded liberal arts background and an outstanding business education. As a result of the core he became a better thinker and a better writer which has helped in the business world.

I think the liberal arts core turned out to be a positive in his overall college education.
