Which is better and Why?

Financial aside, BC hands down. HUGE alumni network, the UC of the east, top ranked D1 sports teams, and a beautiful campus in one of the greatest cities of America. Oh, and did I mention that it’s right next to MIT and Harvard?

Dear undecided2009 : From a campus perspective, both Boston College and Lehigh are similar in that they are “hilly” and you will get your exercise going from place to place on both campuses. Hard to see the “freshman 15” pound gain happening in either place!

Turning to academics, I can point to either for strengths. The Lehigh five-year education program (combined BA/MA) for teaching is exceptional and a drawing card that would challenge the best schools in the country. Lehigh is the only place to go for engineering (as BC does not support that major). Boston College on balance is better across the board in the hard sciences and mathematics. The BC business school is strong and well respected nationally. So, the question starts to come down to what you want to study.

Next discussion point would be location : Boston versus the Lehigh Valley. The Lehigh Valley is more remote from Philadelphia than BC is from Boston. Boston is the ultimate college town in America given the density and quality of schools. The Lehigh Valley is picturesque if you can get past the steel mill infrastructure that is rotting between Lafayette and Lehigh.

Dining between the two (and yes, have taken meals at both schools) : would have to give the nod to Boston College on that one only because the actual dining halls seemed better lit, better maintained, and communal. Lehigh’s food selection however is good and varied from healthy to less-healthy and everything in between.

So, which is better? Depends on what you want to discuss. On balance without more information, BC is a higher ranked and more respected school at this time - but both are well regarded throughout the Northeast.

Hope this helps and good luck.

^^^Not sure if OP is interested in education. Please check out the 5 year BA/MA programs offered by the Lynch School of Education. For those of you who put faith in USNWR rankings, the Lynch School is much higher ranked than Lehigh’s education department.

Not at all interested in Education. D applied undecided to both. However, she is very strong in Math 5 AP Calc and Science. Dad had her also looking at Business. She got into BC and waitlisted Lehigh.

do you know which school she was accepted into? (A&S, CSOM, etc.)

She went undecided so it was A&S.

lehigh is actually higher ranked. depends what you youre thinking about majoring in. i have the same problem (got into both)

^

Actually, BC is. Leigh WAS higher ranked.

Although your D was accepted into A&S, would she be thinking of transferring to CSOM? Internal transfers into the business school are difficult. At Lehigh over 60% of the students are either in engineering or business. The students at Lehigh in A&S are sometimes referred (disparagingly) as being in Arts & Crafts.

I have many family members who have attended both BC & Lehigh. Both schools offer a quality education, good career counseling and alumni connections, and lifelong friends. However, the overall college experience is vastly different at the 2 schools. Boston vs. Bethlehem? ACC vs. Patriot League? Greek life vs. the Mods?

Lehigh is more prestigious; BC is good for a party school though. BC is probs like the 5th best school in the Boston area; whereas Lehigh is well-known (near top in country) in business and engineering.

^ If you reverse everything JUmpJUmp said, then he is correct.

“Lehigh is more prestigious; BC is good for a party school though. BC is probs like the 5th best school in the Boston area; whereas Lehigh is well-known (near top in country) in business and engineering.”

Three letters : L O L .

wow, could you get any more biased? Please name 4 colleges in the Boston are that are hands down better than BC. How is it relevant that Lehigh is better than BC in engineering and business if you’re not going to be majoring in either?

Carroll is ranked consistently in the top 20 business schools. Jumper, do you live in a cave?

they’re both great schools (i’m actually thinking about both)
but jumper, your argument isn’t very solid
carroll is ranked number the number 17 business school in the nation by business week
and lehigh is ranked 26

id pick bc over lehigh, but bc has basically no engineering and thats lehighs strength. or am i wrong, does bc have any pre-engineering courses/majors?

Lehigh is more prestigious, and probably would give you better aid. Why don’t you just wait and see if you even get off the waitlist before you decide on BC for sure…

CoffeeAddict, can you be any more wrong?

“Lehigh is more prestigious”

Don’t make me laugh.

Here, let me provide you with some things called facts.

Lehigh :
- Percent applicants admitted: 28%
- Percent of students who return for sophomore year: 94%

* Scholarships / grants: 69%
- Loans / jobs: 31%

Number who were offered aid: 522

Number who had full need met: 271

BC:
- Percent applicants admitted: 26%
- Percent of students who return for sophomore year: 96%

* Scholarships / grants: 77%
- Loans / jobs: 23%

Number who were offered aid: 939

Number who had full need met: 939

Hm. CoffeeAddict, what were you saying? As far as prestige is concerned, lehigh isn’t even on the radar.

IDK I always thought BC was known as a party school even though it’s ranked higher…that’s what I meant…I know people who go to BC and that’s what they tell me anyways…even one of their dad’s told be at a wedding that BC was known as just a party school…I’m sure employers will know about its rep, but who knows for sure if that affects their view on its prestige…
