I have been accepted into BC and Cornell. I have visited both and really liked them a lot (there were aspects of both that really appealed to me). I know that getting into med school is what you make of your undergrad, but which school would present more opportunities for research, internships, etc.? Which school is better for pre-med?

Having visited BC and talked to Ms. Patricia O’Kane the person that actually talks to pre-med students and does the advising, I can tell you I was sold on their approach. She is a wonderful person that spent time with my D and me to explain the whole process.

The added hook BC has is the Tufts tie-up that will allow you to apply to Tufts Medical school at the end of your Sophomore year. If you have’t talked to Ms. O’Kane please call her and talk to her. One of the most helpful person I have come across in the course of talking to administrators from different colleges.

Cornell has a much stronger reputation for premedical studies, placement in to top medical schools, and medical student success.

Medman: Why do say things like this?

medman would be correct. An Ivy just has more prestige, and top med schools are prestige-hounds. For example, even though it is literally just down the “T”, BC only places a student into Harvard Med once every 4/5 years. BC has only placed one into Yale Med in the last ~10 years or so.

The Tufts early assurance program is extremely competitive, and requires a high gpa. It essentially locks one into the most costly med schools in the country, at the expense of your local instate Uni (which has to be cheaper). With a high gpa, and a decent mcat, that same student should have several excellent med school choices, including Tufts several years hence.

That being said, BC does have an excellent advising, and some very good premed science teachers, in chem, bio and physics. BC has numerous opportunities for on-campus research and, of course, Boston is surrounded by bio tech/pharma companies who are always seeking interns.
