So I just got deferred Early Action so I thought I’d immerse myself fully in the role of regular decision candidate. Boston College is my dream school so I’m holding onto that deferral and praying it turns into an acceptance in March! Just wanted to start this thread since it didn’t exist yet!
Hey! I didn’t apply EA but I am applying RD. Let’s hope for the best!
Do you know when RD hears back from BC?
Deferred here as well, working on my mid-year report. Let’s hope for better luck the second round!
Does anyone know the stats on deferred applicants?
What do you think my chances are at RD if I applied just based on my scores. I have a 1390 sat and a 3.9 gpa out of 4. Good luck to everyone

Impossible to give you any answer.
If anyone tries to, it will be as reliable as a dart board toss.
I got deferred so I called the admissions office and they said that 20% of deferred students get in
@chilonbos23:
Is that “20%” just what it happened to be last year?
Or is it a pre-defined limit that they will operate to meet?
Unless the adcoms will chime in to prove me wrong, I have to believe it’s the former.
Does anyone know how much weight BC puts on GPA? I have suffered 4 concussions over the past 3 years, leading me to have a messy transcript and a GPA much lower than it should be (still about a 3.5/4 but should be 4.0). My counselor explained this in detail as well as my other medical issues in my letter of rec, but I am worried they might not even care to see the rest of my app with my low GPA. Rest of application is above their “requirements”, though.
@ege1916, from what I have gleaned over the years, it seems that BC assigns more value to GPA/rank than on test scores. Of course many other factors are considered also. It was smart of you to have your counselor address your medical issues in your letter of rec. Don’t worry, do your best for the remainder of the year, and best of luck.
@jpm50 I believe 20% is what they intend to have for this year
As a parent I find it more helpful to see actual statistics of who gets admitted rather than just a discussion of chances. I think it provides better context for students and parents conducting research.
To that end, my daughter was accepted to Boston College - Early Action. GPA 4.65W / 3.98 UW, Apprx 75% honors classes. Challenging, competitive high school. ACT 33 comp, not super scored. 3 AP classes. Elementary Ed major. White, no financial aid need (EFC > Tuition). 4 year varsity athlete, although not playing a sport in college. Good volunteer work, good teaching experience leading to major, references were probably very good - very high character, although minimal leadership skills. No word on merit scholarship, although unlikely at BC.
@yobub34 Do you know if your daughter received admission to the BC Honors College? Also, congratulations! Is BC her top school?
I don’t recall seeing anything about the honors college. The information on the website was pretty limited, and we haven’t received the admissions packet yet. I’ll update once we get the packet.
Not sure whether BC will be her top choice - we haven’t visited yet, and it is MUCH more expensive than some of the other schools she is looking at. The brand name isn’t as valuable in education as it is in other fields, so it’s a little hard to justify what might be $200k difference in cost.
Did anyone else get the email saying decisions would come out the week of March 12th?
My daughter got in EA honors. Sounds like a great program and we visited this past summer and she loved it. However, she didn’t get invited for the merit scholarship and didn’t receive any financial aid, other than $6000 in combined work study/student loans. So basically we would need to come up with 65k that we do not have, or take out parent loans for that amount, which we will not do. We live in a state that has higher rated public schools (UC Berkeley) for half the cost, so it really doesn’t make sense. It is too bad though because if the costs were the same or close, she would have absolutely loved to attend.
@reeves33 My son did not get the email as he applied EA and was accepted. However, I can tell you that when it got closer to EA decisions being released, we received the email that decisions would be released the week of Dec 11 (Sunday). Then on that day or the next, there was an email that the decisions would be released the “later part of the week.” Decisions were released on Thursday, Dec 15. They are on a rolling basis by time zone. BC says it takes 3 hours for the decisions to be released to everyone.
I applied regular decision to BC. I guess they will be releasing decisions the week of March 12. I’m so nervous I just want to find out.
^I got the email saying decisions will be out March 12. I’m just as nervous about the financial aid package though
