I think everyone is over-emphasizing the asian factor. @leahleah may have not thought that BC was that difficult a school to get into. To be honest, neither did I. I knew it was difficult, but comparing myself to friends who have gotten in and are attending, I felt like I had a very good shot shot. Regardless, I’m still happy to get in though. I will most likely attend Georgia Tech since its BME program is top 2 (or 3 or 4), and BC didn’t have BME (mainly applied for Boston and friends) but congratulations to all those who received the happy news, and for all those who didn’t, don’t give up hope! One of my friends who got in last year got in off the waitlist, and her stats were comparable if not slightly lower to several of the wait-listed folks I see here.
Ahem, I used the word, perhaps, for a reason.
rejected
3.4 UW GPA
33 ACT
decent extracurriculars and lots of volunteering
thought my supplement was ehh
I applied to BC only because I visited.
so far also accepted to UCSD, Northeastern, Tulane, and UW Seattle
Lol the use of perhaps doesn’t make it any less rude. Hinting that she got in because of race is the same thing as just plain stating it. Rationalizing it doesnt make it either polite or a fair assumption lol. what if you went somewhere and someone made a snide comment implying your daughter’s acceptance was influenced by something other than academic merits? pretty rude lololol!!!
What’s good with these moms on here cuz =))
What a silly (or naive) question wrt admissions.
Of course, everyone accepted to a top school has “influences” other than academics. (Hint: that’s why they call it holistic admissions!)
Essays count, and not all are about academics. Engineering schools and business schools provide a plus factor for women. Colleges also give plus factors to those who are low-low income. Some acceptees are D1 recruits. Legacy also counts, particularly at the Ivies. Those are just a few of non-academic factors related to admissions.
Some/many LACs, particularly those in rural towns, are public about seeking all people of color, including Asians.
Non-academic uniqueness should be embraced!
OTOH, many state colleges are all about numbers: GPA+test scores, only.
Standing by @bluebayou on this one. His (or her?) comments weren’t rude at all. His point was that her “hook” for one school might be different for another. He was stating the very distinct possibility that BC might have liked her “hook” better than the Ivies will, based on how they are trying to diversify their class. This is a very legitimate and objective statement.
Stating that your race (URM, ORM) might be a hook, just like legacy, athletic ability, or something else subjective, is a reality and typically not a point of contention on these threads. In fact, “hook” is one of the lines on those stats forms that some students fill out on the results only threads. Generally speaking, no one negatively judges someone because they are accepted for minority status, it’s just a fact that it can be an influencing factor. If anything, @bluebayou brought up the fact that it might be HARDER for her to get into the Ivies because she is an ORM there. And the whole reason he brought it up was because he felt, as did I, that her “not surprised” comment could be insulting to some students. We have since agreed that she may not have meant it that way, but that was how some of us took it. I think we can all agree it can be easy to misinterpret each other’s posts at times.
Race is irrelevant. If you say you got in and then say “Not surprised” when lots of people are surprised they did not get in, you are being arrogant and you need to grow up.
Back on (thread) point: CONGRATS to the new Eagles.
If you were waitlisted and want to enhance your chances of matriculating to Chestnut Hill, search the BC thread for posts by scottj, a former parent of two Eagles. Scott has wonderful suggestions on how to craft a winning ‘Why BC’ letter.
Good luck.
Oh my gosh… Everyone, I am not a fluent english speaker as you all have already noticed. I just want to apologize my word choice “not surprised” and the fact that I stated that I’m just waiting for hearing from other colleges. I really was not really thinking much or putting lots of thoughts while commenting. I totally want to apologize to the people who got upset by my comments.
Also, I don’t think I got accepted just because I am an Asian female. My GPA is almost perfect, have taken 10 AP’s, and my sat score is 2250. I also have played sports too, done lots of volunteer work and leadership roles in club activities.
I still am very (!!!) excited to get accepted to BC, and I might attend!
Apologies again, I’m really sorry.
Thanks, @leahleah those are impressive stats and congrats! Thanks for clarifying.
Is there any way to see the decision online? Do I need to contact the office of admissions?
i got the email with my acceptance, but i wanted to make sure it was legitimate so i looked in the portal–could not find anything about decisions… I would suggest calling the admissions office during the week… Did you not get an email?
To confirm, all decisions were sent via e-mail from the admission office with the attached decision letter. If you did not receive it, we encourage you to check your Spam folder. There is no portal update to reflect the decision. Finally, the only hard-copy letters sent are acceptance letters.
–Boston College Undergraduate Admission
rejected
3.86 UW, 2290 SAT, 790 Lit SAT II, 710 on spanish and us history SAT IIs, 5 scores of 5 on AP exams (human geo, world history, spanish language, english language, U.S. history), captain of my soccer team, a lot of other clubs…
disappointed and (honestly) a little surprised.
@aerialkh that’s surprising, too bad you have great stats. What school did you apply to if you don’t mind me asking?
ACCEPTED! 3.68 UW 4.65 W 2040 SAT 31 ACT
@collegemomjam I applied to CSOM, which is probably why–from what I’ve heard that’s the most selective college.
@arizonacarly I didn’t get an email (and it wasn’t in my spam) but friends of mine who applied did… I know that they don’t post decisions on line so I’ll have to call the office
@DevlinHall208 thank you!

Essays (subject and responses): CommonApp essay very good
The Essay for BC… well, overall it was average but I made a huge mistake. I wrote about how I would love to take part in some courses, and left a space with a caption (insert course name here) to check back and paste the exact name of the courses. But then I forgot to double-check and sent it with the caption (insert courses name here). Do you think it may have had any influence???
Teacher Recs: Didn’t see them, but I hear they were very good.
Counselor Rec: Didn’t see it, but she likes me a lot
Hook: International Student? Good ECs for a future business major

State or Country: Poland
School Type, Average Stats of School (if available): The 3rd best school in Poland
Ethnicity: White

Strengths: Extracurriculars
Weaknesses: I would say my GPA, just because I don’t know how my counselor wrote it, supplemental essay (because of the error), SAT II scores
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: honestly I do not know why I was waitlisted. I want to think it’s because of the huge mistake in the essay… being waitlisted from BC makes me anxious about other acceptances…
