Boston College Regular Decision 2019

Got into CSOM EA, M+CR=1320; GPA 4.1 weighted; decent leadership positions, volunteering, EC; From MA; college process is so unpredictable but hey im not complaining

Rejected:(

From a very rigorous private school in NJ, 2230 SAT, strong grades (my school doesn’t do GPA but I have about an A- average in honors/AP classes), 3 varsity sports (captain of 1), leader of my school’s environmental group, admissions tour guide, writing center tutor, studied abroad in Germany last summer. I thought my essays were very good too!

Pretty bummed because I really liked BC, but I applied to a 16 schools in total, so hopefully I’ll end up somewhere good!

Not sure if you can appeal. My daughter got waitlisted. 4.0 uw, 4.6 weighted gpa, 2000 SAT. ranked #3 out of 550. ASB president, etc. How does that happen?

@scnofziger - too many outstanding and qualified candidates, not enough seats. What is sad (and scary) is that many well-qualified kids who fall in the 50th percentile (and higher) stats of many schools they view as their “target” schools aren’t getting in. You expect to be rejected by your reach schools, but accepted at most, if not all, of your target schools. However, that doesn’t seem to be happening anymore with the explosion of record numbers of applications. I thought the number of graduating seniors peaked last year and was starting to go the other way, but most of the schools my S applied to this year have seen record numbers of applications. Rejected by Notre Dame and UVA (OOS) (reaches), waitlisted by BC (target), still waiting on Lehigh, Bucknell, W&L (two targets and a reach). Fortunately was accepted EA to Villanova, which was his “safety” since he didn’t want to apply to any that he truly didn’t want to attend. Might turn out to be his only option. Only applied to 7 schools and he’s starting to sweat… S1 with similar stats two years ago applied to 15 schools, rejected by 2 (UVA, UNC, both OOS), waitlisted by 1 (Wake Forest), accepted by all the rest, including BC, Lehigh, Bucknell, Richmond, etc. Something tells me the same wouldn’t happen this time around. S2 originally assumed applying to 15 schools was too many and unnecessary, but now might be reconsidering…

Accepted!!

33 ACT, 3.9 UW GPA.
Great letters of recommendation and well written essay. Many extracurriculars and captain of two varsity sports.

Accepted at Butler University, UW Madison, Tufts, and Univeristy of Illinois - Urbana Champaign

Waitlisted at WashU

Denied at Vanderbilt

Would anyone care to explain to a waitlisted worried person what happened with the 29,000+ applicants competing for 2,250 spots??? How did the acceptance rate go down to that low… if the stats are true would it be around 7%?? And if not, the acceptance rate has really really dropped from the 30% to 17%

Your missing component is yield. A bunch of the accepted students won’t attend, so the school accepts a bunch of extras. If they accepted 17% and as you said, have spots for 2250/29000 = 7%, then their expected yield is 7/17 or around 41%. So about 60% of accepted students will attend elsewhere, leaving around 2250 to attend.

@NewportHSSenior Is it published somewhere that BC had 29,000 applicants? I had heard 22,000-24,000. Crazy number of applicants either way!

@skipper26‌ BU admissions said 22,000 for RD and another 7,000 for early action

Wow! Thanks @Will35‌

I think @Daddio3 is right about the yield protection, which plays into the mom’s comments a few posts before his that was surprised her son was waitlisted and her other son hadn’t been a few years ago (by the way if your son got in Nova EA I really think he will get into Bucknell…Lehigh is unpredictable).

This yield protection factor seems to be a trend in most schools this year which is why we are seeing so many waitlists (but a lot of rejections too which is weird). I actually think it is risky for the schools to rely too much on their waitlists. Kids want to know on 5/1 where they are going and will obviously have to pick somewhere. They may get set on that school and even if their waitlists come through they may decide to stay with the school that wanted them first. I personally was accepted to BC (30 years ago!) but waitlisted at Cornell and got into Cornell off of the waitlist and went to BC anyway. It should be interesting to see how this all plays out.

In the mean time, those of you that didn’t get in, you have amazing stats and I’m sure if you don’t get in off of the waitlist, you will end up at a different great school! Good luck!

@Will35…I just noticed you mentioned BU…you meant BC, right?

@collegemomjam S won’t necessarily get into Bucknell either as their applications increased 39%!!! this year (http://www.bucknell.edu/news-and-media/2015/february/a-record-year-for-admissions-applications.html). Absolutely unbelievable! Of course he fits the mold of the previous “typical Bucknell student” - white, from Northeast, etc. that they apparently are looking to change. Since they art looking to expand geographically and add “diversity”, there is a very real chance he will not be admitted this year. The paradigm is shifting way too quickly to keep up with. He is a legacy at Lehigh, which used to help, but I’m not counting on anything anymore either. (S2 wound up going to Lehigh ultimately, after really struggling to decide between there and BC.) Very frustrating - I really feel for him. Smart, involved kid. Busted his hump for years working toward this, and the doors are starting to close. This will be a nerve-wracking week.

@Yocco1 I agree it will be a crazy week! Hang in there you really don’t know what is going to happen. I had heard that about Bucknell also, but I still think the EA at Nova is a good sign (by the way, also a great choice especially if he is business the program is fabulous!). My D who also got into Nova EA got a special invitation from Bucknell to apply for their presidential scholarship, and she didn’t get that from the others that you mentioned (we applied to all of the same schools!). She did get into BC EA CSOM (and she is likely going there) and she had the stats, like it sounds like your son did, but she also had legacy from me. Your legacy might tip the scales for him to get into Lehigh…I bet is does. Keep us posted and I’m sure he will get in somewhere but I share your sentiment about it getting harder and harder each year. I have a 10th grader and a 7th grader and am dreading what the future holds for their classes!

I have a few questions if anyone can answer, it would be appreciated

When do financial aid packages become available? Also, who else has submitted FAFSA/tax return/w-2 and their portal still say that they are missing (although other documents have been received)? And if we were going to get merit aid, would we have found out in the email they sent with the acceptance or does it come separately in the physical mail?

BC doesn’t really give merit aid…a few lucky students get presidential scholarships, but the rest is mostly need based.

@eee888eee‌ You can check back on the portal on the 23rd (Monday) to view your financial package!

Son got accepted!! GPA 3.8; SAT 2120; SAT Bio 700 Math750 Hist 720;

Besides D1 athletic scholarships, BC only awards ~dozen presidential scholarships…and to eligible, you would have had to apply EA. (And you would know by now if you were a candidate.) All other aid is need-based.

@skipper26 yes I meant BC. I had literally just looked at my financial aid from BU, which is probably why I said it. My apologies
