I am a rising senior, wondering which college would be better for a Pre-Med track. I have heard a lot of mixed reviews which I expect, but I would like a better idea of the pros and cons of the two. I am a hardworking student with good grades, but, I’m concerned with the rumors about grade deflation at either school.
SO many kids go to BU for the sciences and it is so large that I am worried it may be harder to do as well and stand out since there are so many students going for the same thing and they apparently try to weed out the students, whereas in BC I might stand out a little better among the smaller pool and get more one on one time with my science professors.
HOWEVER I read somewhere that BC, though it is a prestigious and challenging school, has a “god awful” science department. Which would be a better fit for me to excel and challenge myself positively and continue onto a decent med-school, possibly even a top tier med school like Harvard or Yale.
Son’t pay attention to everything you hear and read.
Most freshmen premeds weed themselves out at e every school by getting low grades. BU and BC are very different schools for reasons that can be experienced on a visit. Go where you see yourself fitting in.
Yes I’ve been trying to do that, but as you said I’m not sure I can believe everything I’m reading and hearing. There is a huge rivalry between the two, so I have been seeing a lot of reviews from opposite sides of the spectrum.
Are you looking for a somewhat 24/7 campus life? If so BC
Do you want or can you accept a Catholic Environment? If so BC
Are you looking for a very diverse student body? If so BU
Are you looking for big time athletics? If so BC (though BC is in an athletic slump lately)
Urban environment? BU
Suburban environment? BC
Thank you for taking the time to reply, that helped!!
Also BC is much smaller and more focused on undergraduate education. It may be easier to get to know faculty members. On the other hand BU as a major research university with a medical school may provide more opportunities for undergrad research which looks good on a med school application.
Agree with TomSr that a visit is the easiest way to know. BU and BC are basically only similar in that they have Boston in their name. You will almost certainly like one better than the other, typically significantly so, after a visit.
Also since you will be in Boston visit Northeastern University!
I visited NU, BU, and BC and I loved both BU and BC and that was how I encountered this issue Because it really comes down to the academics and specifically sciences at each.
