Boston College vs Carnegie Mellon - biology research

Title says it all…

ppl say Boston College is the “better known” for biological research and premed track
carnegie mellon definitely has a weak bio program compared to its engineering and business

but i kinda like CMU on the diversity side
but BC in boston area is a really big plus…

any advices please?

i am planning to do bio research in whichever college i attend and hopefully get a phD in molecular biology

BC being in the Boston area is a huge plus!

BC is well know and well organized for pre med. Premed is more about getting good grades than doing research, however. Medical schools will teach you what you need to know. BC Biology has a large enrollment, I think the largest of the sciences, which has its good points and bad points. Most have pre-med aspirations.

BC tends to be more teaching oriented than research oriented but they have a few strong chemical and biological specialties. Check out the Chemistry and Biology school web pages for the types of research they are doing. There is also oportunities for reasearch in surrounding labs.

The BC chemistry and biological tract is more rigorous than most other schools in that labs don’t count toward graduation credit. You end up with a 5 course workload while your peers at other schools have a four course work load.

Not sure how CM stacks up, but a more technical biased school would probably provide more diverse research opportunities. Research is not the prime focus of BC’s professors.

There have been a few recent “how is the BC science program” threads with much more detailed info, discussion, points of view.
