Boston College vs. Fordham University

So I'm planning to major in bio and head on to that pre med trackway. I'm deciding between boston college and fordham university. While bc is the "better school", I'm getting good money for fordham. I'm not really sure what I'm asking, I guess I just need advice/info on the premed "programs" at bc and fordham.

Hi,

As a current student of Fordham (and coincidentally on the Pre-Med track), I want to make you aware of my experience here. The pre-med department is really lacking here, in and of itself. The classes are large and often difficult to get into, even if they are within your major. Additionally, the core requirements here are INTENSE and arbitrary. The classes aren’t “good” and people take them to get good grades rather than enjoy the material. I have been really disappointed with my experience here so far and really wish someone had given me insight.

I am a bio major and was locked out of bio classes completely for next semester. Additionally, I was guaranteed housing and currently do not have housing for next semester, a huge problem. The administration is really unresponsive and dismissive when you can finally talk with them.

Retrospectively, I wish I had gone with another school. Although there isn’t much I can do about my time here so far, I do warn you about making the decision to come here.

Further, BC is far more progressive than Fordham. Fordham is very stalwart in their “catholic” beliefs, and they are not open to discussions that challenge their strict views. If you aren’t a devout catholic, this is also not the best place.

There is little to do on campus other than go to one of three bars which are off campus each weeknight, and EVERYONE does. I had planned on a much different college experience and, as a young girl, walking through the Bronx at night is not a good idea. Please, please let me know if you have any other questions. I’m really just a concerned peer looking to give people the perspective I didn’t have access to when I was making my decision.

I am sad to see one unhappy person bash Fordham in such a negative fashion. This is not the experience my son is having at all! This student should transfer. Perhaps she has not connected with friends? How can you say BC is more progressive? Based on what? I always find it interesting when a person compares one campus to another when they have experience at one campus! My son is Catholic but has been pleased with the relaxed nature of the Catholic approach. Very open. Very Jesuit. Come if you want. They do stress service and character but church not so much. My son has gone to the bars but spends a lot of his free time doing very exciting and student friendly actives in the greatest city in the world. Saturday night Live, Central Park concerts, Superbowl frenzy, NCAA madness, Yankee game, Halloween parade, Christmas events, amazing burgers and pizza and Little Italy. Never ever bored but NY was a huge reason he picked this school over a more remote suburban school. You will need to study a LOT to go on to Med school but the acceptance rate and success from Fordham is high. My dorm mate chose Fordham over BC for money and the appeal of NYC. If NY is not a draw for you the more suburban feel of BC may resonate. Congratulations on getting offered a financial package.

I would go with BC if only for prestige. Fordham is a decent school with good name recognition, but it isn’t on the level of BC academically.
