Boston College vs. Northwestern

I’ve been accepted to both.
Which should i choose? I’m a prospective business major. BC has a great business school (#14?), and NU doesnt have an undergrad business school. I’m leaning toward BC, but i dont know all about NU. What aspects of BC would put solidify my decision to attend BC.

the social life is immensely better at BC and in my opinion, the campus is much prettier. boston and chicago are two very cool cities, and BC and NU are very good schools.

I'm assuming you got into the Honors Program based on the fact that you got into NU. I feel that being in the BC program gives you the environment of a fun school, with an education on par with NU's. Also, at BC in the honors program you get immensely better access with professors, even writing a culminating senior thesis one on one with a professor.

no honors program (confusing i know), but i'm going to try to get into BC's honors program after first semester if i decide to go there.

this is a response from a northwestern person regarding the same question. i put this on the northwestern area too.

"If you are leaning toward BC because you think BC is stronger in business, then you are VERY wrong. First of all, #14 is very mediocre in a ranking that doesn't include most of the heavy weights (HYPMS, Duke, Northwestern, Chicago...etc). That's why undergrad b-school ranking is so misleading--all these obscure programs all of a sudden look much better because most top b-schools don't have undergrad programs. Secondly, I am very sure NU has better recruiting--in terms of number of top firms that actively interview on campus. NU is one of the most targeted schools for them. Northwestern's economics program is a top-10 program and you will be more marketable with an econ degree from NU than a business degree from BC. You will also have a chance to get into the certificate program from Kellogg School of Managment, one of the most known b-school in the world. Pick BC if you think it fits you better there but if you are talking solely about prestige and academic program, regardless if it's business related or not, I'd pick Northwestern without any doubt."

thoughts anyone? i'm still leaning toward BC despite this...

if ur on a business track, u will probably get farther with a MBA later on so u dont necessarily need to be a business major just yet. if u judge by ranking, well NU is 14 and BC is 34 on us news

As I talked to a recent Alum from CSOM on the phone, he told me that the undergraduate program at BC is and I quote, "Their bread and butter." Some schools are better at the undergrad level then at the graduate level and this is the case with Boston College. BC is very respected in the Northeast and CSOMers run the city of Boston and are all over NYC.

NU is a great school dont get me wrong but when I went and stayed at BC with a friend I went to an information session. Their was a panal of about five students and a lady asked them to describe BC in a few words, and one of the girls responded "perfect balance." Academics, sports life, social life, community service, Jesuit Education, city of boston at your fingertips but you are in your own little suberb, no need for a car, four season weather, Men and Women for Others, Ever to Excel!

Not many schools in the country can match all of that.

^^ As a current BC CSOM Honors Student (who visited NU but didn't even apply), I can say that this is very well put

Do you think the same goes for BC Economics students? Or should I transfer into the business school. I've always had a thing against studying Business, I don't think it's very intellectually stimulating. I would be in the Honors A+S program otherwise, you think I could land a good internship with a decent GPA (3.5+) studying Economics?

You can definitely do that.

this shouldnt even be debated. Northwestern is a great school. BC is a good school. Great>Good. Unless you absolutely hate Northwestern, go there.

thanks guys,
i just got back from NU and it was pretty nice...but i have to admit that BC's campus is nicer than NU's. I'm also looking for a new experience. I've been to boston once in my life (to visit bc) and been to chicago a ton (I live in midwest). plus, i am a devout catholic and NU is not religious-affiliated, though they have catholic groups that get together and stuff. I'm going to boston tomorrow for a few days to make a final decision. i am really torn. NU may be a better school academically, but i could learn and grow from the different culture that boston has to offer in order to complete a more full college experience. any further advice from anyone would be much appreciated.

Go Irish, was Notre Dame your first choice?

its interesting that he wouldve got into Northwestern and not Notre Dame, but stranger things have happened

yes, nd was my first choice...rejected there, admitted to northwestern.
its very weird. i dont know what happened.

oh man,
only a few days to go...i still dont know what to do...HELP!!!

dude same here BC or USC for me

you have to go to Northwestern, no question about it. not a tough choice

for what reasons, ckmets?

because its just a lot better..better student body, better faculty, more prestigious...if you choose BC, youre basically picking a college for its location/parties..this is not how college should be chosen IMO
