I applied to both RD and i feel like they are generally similiar except for location. What do you guys think??

We were in the same situation and my daughter chose Boston College. The decision was a relatively easy one for her, as she much preferred the Boston environment and proximity to a thriving city life, over Wake’s North Carolina/Winston-Salem location. She had other reasons, too, many of which have already been covered here on CC. Here’s a link to one such discussion.

I will also add that we know several students currently attending Wake who are frustrated by the grade deflation. On a more positive note, the campus is beautiful and everybody we met there seemed very friendly and helpful.

I would echo Kelly’s response. My son was accepted to both BC and Wake RD and chose BC because of the location (proximity to home and Boston), and the vibe from the BC campus. Loved the Wake campus, too, but it was a haul from CT. Both are great schools.

BC just smacked Wake twice in basketball, I hope that answers your question.

My brother had the same choice and picked Wake Forest. The work is hard…

I chose BC over WF. Wake Forest was a bit too waspy and small for my tastes. Plus, they said that most of the activity happens off campus… in Winston-Salem…

I chose BC of Wake Forest because I felt like BC had a lot more to offer in terms of social life and opportunities rather than just being sucked into greek life and a city that isn’t really anything spectacular (Winston-Salem). There were a lot of other reasons but WF seemed too preppy for me and I imagined going there on a vacation rather than living and studying there.

A few things…

Wake is a smaller school with 4000 something undergrads. I believe BC has 9 or 10000.

Greek life dominates the social scene at Wake. It doesn’t exist at BC.

Weather is better at Wake.

There is BAD grade deflation at Wake which can be frustrating when applying to grad school. I would never go to Wake because of this.

Boston is better than Winston-Salem.

At least in MA, BC is way more prestigious. I don’t know about other parts of the country.

BC has better sports.

Both are known for fun social scenes and partying.

Good luck with your decision.

There are a lot of reasons to choose one school over the other, but this is not one of them because it’s not true. The mean gpa at Wake is 3.2+ which is similar to many other private colleges, and some publics for that matter. Sure, Wake doesn’t have the grade inflation of HYPS, but then no one other than Brown does either. :)

OTOH, even if you believe that grades may be a little easier at BC, the competition is stiffer as well. ~90% of BC’s class was top decile in HS, in contrast to 65% at WF. BC has higher test scores…

I have a son at BC and a daughter at WF. Both could have gone to either school, and both are very happy with their decisions! While on paper the schools may seem similar except for size and location, they are actually very different. If you are able, go visit each one and find out which is the best fit for you! Good Luck!

Three years ago i made the same choice, and chose BC. I really liked WF’s campus and small class size, but BC provided me with access to numerous businesses and internships in Boston (where I want to settle post-graduation), so here I am.

You really can’t go wrong with either, but they are pretty different in terms of size and culture (BC being within access of a major metropolitan city, WF being in a much more secluded area).

Also, Greek Life is a large part of WF’s social scene, so that’s definitely an important factor to consider. At BC, friendships are mostly made based on who lives on your freshman floor, where there’s a wide variety of students to meet and become friends with.

Best of luck!
