Hi all! I’m planning on majoring in the STEM field. Right now I’m planning on choosing biochemistry and was wondering what the reputation was for biochemistry at Boston College? Will they offer a lot of research programs and prepare me well for the MCAT? Does it offer a lot in the STEM Pre-Med field? Please let me know right away what you think!
I’d like to know about this too.
bump.
BC overall has a strong pre-med program. I had quite a few friends who majored in Biochemistry, they had to work very hard to get good grades and many of them are moving on to med school. It’s not going to be easy, but as long as you work hard, you will be ready for the MCAT. I’m not too sure about research opportunities because it is so competitive, there just isn’t enough spots for everyone wanting to work in a lab.
On 5/1 you posted that you were trying to decide between University of Minnesota and University of Wisconsin. What happened? They would be better schools for research.
fwiw: if you are still deciding, BC’s Chem program is one of its strongest STEM majors.
BC and the Boston environs have a ton of research opportunities available. And volunteering opps at Harvard’s main hospitals…
@bluebayou So would you say it’s better to go here than the University of Wisconsin or other state school???
no, not saying that at all. Both are great colleges, but neither will make a difference in med school admissions. Med school Adcoms will not see any difference between the two.
Are you instate for UW (or a MN resident)? Would you be paying full price at BC? That makes a huge difference in cost.
The private school, Jesuit education is wonderful, but only your family can decide whether its worth 2x in price.
BC is 71k this year, which is a lot. I have had friends that have left school because the office did not provide them with enough money. They had enough one year, and the next year, they did not receive the same amount. If you browse medical school forums, you will see that med schools do not care about undergrad to a point.
BC is pretty good with chemistry (nice labs), however it is hard to get research as it is difficult to find opportunities at the school. A lot of kids say that they are pre-med the first semester of freshman year, and then they quit the track due to weeder courses, like general chemistry. So, this shows that pre-med is hard, which is good. However, BC is not really known for sciences or STEM compared to business. You will be surrounded by people who are in CSOM (management school), so it is up to you. I would say that it comes down to the money tbh.
