marite, have you seen the new building? Do you think it will lure students and faculty to the school?

Dstark:

No, I have not seen the building, though the look of it is probably less important than the quality of its facilities. It strikes me, though, that when parents complain about sticker shock, they forget that their kids are the ones demanding better dorms, better gyms, better food, etc... I doubt it's the faculty that's going to make the most use of the building.

However, I also wanted to post for the benefit of parents and students who might be considering where to apply. BU has improved in quality tremendously since the 1960s, both in terms of faculty and students... And now, it is paying attention to its facilities. So perhaps, it will lure some students. Northeastern, btw, is also transforming itself from a commuter school into a residential university.

We HAVE seen the new building and it is simply put...fabulous. It will be the hub of the West Campus part of Boston University. The official dedication and opening was actually Friday evening (I only know this because the trumpet studio was playing fanfares at the opening and DS played). The old athletic facilities were in dire need of replacement. They were cramped and outdated. Plus BU did not have an indoor arena for things like concerts or programs with larger crowds. This new arena can accommodate those things too. Now that they've finished it, the old facilities will be turned into a fitness center for the rest of the students (and they won't have to wait in line for the athletes). AND I'm hoping they will also now attend to creating a decent fine arts facility. In fact, I'm going to write a letter to the president of BU to offer to be on a parent committee to get this going.
