I think with Boston Latin getting rid of their admission testing and moving to a quota system, there are going to big changes on the horizon. And not for the better.
Milton is having a rough time due to pandemic. If I were choosing now I’d look at BB&N as I think their pandemic plans are far better than Milton’s.
(I assume you’re looking for day schools)
Well Boston Latin is free!!! So that’s a big consideration. If it’s based on a quota system then essentially it changes forever. Boston Latin has been a stepping stone for so many over the years. It’s a great place. Kids go from there to anywhere. Has an urban feel and there are going to be less EC’s than at BS which are highly funded.
I’d say Milton is a great school. I don’t have specific details. They have a split I think roughly 50/50 between day and boarding so that could be a non-starter for some or fine for others.
BBN Pro: has excellent matriculation (mainly based on sports and legacy IMHO). Has excellent classes/academics and a great new STEM center. Beautiful campus.
Con: Unlike a BS that has activities well into early evening, BBN activities end much earlier. Kids are not going to be going to dinner and studying at the library after. Has been known to have cliques according to many. We acknowledged less diversity and perhaps more full pay but seemed friendly enough. People did not engage during open houses which was not our experience at other schools who had super friendly staff and parents. Again single data point. My kid wasn’t a huge fan but liked it well enough. Seemed like many kids were from the same 4-6 towns. That was a real downside. Had almost no international students. 5 day boarding meant kids are all essentially local so limited geographic diversity either. (0-50 miles).
Another thing about Milton is that it’s K-12 so a lot of kids entering 9th already know one another well - for better or worse - and so it might be tougher to break in as a totally new 9th grader. Or, they might really welcome you as new blood
BBN is a 7-12 school ( I think, it starts in 7th). This changes things a bit. As schools with earlier acceptances can have different outcomes.
Boston Latin also starts earlier than 9th grade. I think it may start in 7/8th.
BB&N is Pre-K - 12th grade.
This will be contentious, but I think that Boston Latin is a better school. I think that Milton’s reputation has gone downhill. It’s still a great school, but there’s a lot of money, a bigger emphasis on sports, and a big emphasis on legacies. I know that Boston Latin is having to make some changes because of COVID, but I think they’ll be fine. Boston Latin’s also in a much more fun location.
Boston Latin has intakes at 6th and at 9th. I don’t believe they take kids at other years, period.
Milton has an elementary/middle school that they basically treat as a separate school from the high school. They don’t share facilities at all, and I think a lot of the Milton middle school kids go to other high schools.
BB&N starts in PreK, but has intake years at 6th and 9th. They’ll accept kids in other years if they have openings.
Boston Latin starts at 7th grade, not 6th grade.
Milton Academy students share certain facilities with the upper school such as the science center, snack bar, gym, etc. but no-ne really feels like they are in the others’ space per se. It works extremely well. And next to zero kids from Milton Academy middle school transfer out to other high schools, it’s a much loved place!
again, look at leadership during the pandemic. it really tells you a lot about a school.
hi, do you know which grade is entry point of BBN? Thank u.
