Be completely honest: do you like your school? I know the academics are good and all, but do you actually enjoy it there? Boston is one of the coolest cities in the world, so how is it attending school there? Social life, housing, city life, teacher/student relationships, etc… Thanks for any info.

what kind of question is this? of course. haha.

not really i wouldn't know first-hand but my friend who goes there on a full ride said that he had a great first semester. the weather was sort of a killer since he was from the south but he said he handled it well.

p.s. bones brigade, crunch time, mental, mind eraser, righteous jams, stop and think, ten yard fight, the suicide file, and the wrong side.

if any dude on this board knows how any of those groups relate to boston they will be declared the best dude on this board. prize!@#

Well a ton of people at my school HATE my high school like no other, but its one of the best in San Francisco, and you will only hear great things from teachers, counselors, parents, etc. But many people will tell you that it sucks. So it good to have these kind of less formal forums where people aren't "required" to tell you good things. So yeah...thanks...in advance.

rayx- bones brigade; you mean the punk rock group?
Edit: aren't they all rock groups?

well, if you consider the hardcore genre of music to be under the broad spectrum of rock, then yes they are all rock groups which have came out of boston. anyways, i just wanted to see if anyone into boston u was into hardcore.

buy their cds and get into them! haha, if you want.

p.s. i don't know if you have seen this or not but this site has very honest opinions of bu: http://www.studentsreview.com/MA/BOU.html

Thanks for posting that link! I've been searching around for that, but I didn't remember what it was called.

Hey, I'm a current student at BU. Hmm, I actually do NOT like it that much, and I am hoping to transfer to Cornell this fall. I live in West Campus and the walk is quite long to classes...can you imagine walking in 0 degree weather for 25 minutes). Academics can be tough, depending what you are studying. I am studying Economics/Pre-Med, and the workload can be overwhelming at times. E-mail any more questions to me at newyorkcity2012@hotmail.com

Isn't Cornell just as cold? Anywho, I'm no stranger to -30 wind chills, because I've lived in NE all my life. I don't know... It's not too bad as long as your covered up pretty well.

Love it...great school with great people. Huge number of responses to similar question from current BU students on livejournal web site--check under Boston university---specifically BUnite section or BU08 or BU09

stary...where at in Nebraska? I live in Omaha...and I'm applying to BU too.

On another note...I just had a guy come into my workplace wearing a BU t-shirt not that long ago and I asked him if he went there...he said he didn't, but his sister did and she loved it. Of course, I have also heard of people hating it, one of my mom's friend's daughters went there and transfered after her first year...so my mom's definitely a sceptic. I have to admit...it is a BIG school. And I'm still not quite sure if I want to go to one that big...any opinions on what it's like going to such a large private school?

I'm sorry... I meant New England. ;)

About going to a big school-
I visited quite a few smaller campuses in the past month because I had to audition for their music school, and I personally felt that BU is definitely where I want to go. I felt so far away from everyone and everything at these schools. Granted, I could make it one year if I had to, but I just felt rather disconnected. I loved the feel BU had when I went up there to audition. Unlike the campus tour I went on during a holiday, there were students actually walking around campus. It's probably just a personal preference, but I liked the busy, lively feel it had, while at the same time it wasn't as overwhelming and intimidating as NYC may seem.

Yes if you choose West Campus you will have a longer walk---more like 10-15 not 20 minutes as stated early. If its cold you just hop on the T and get there in less than 5. West is a little further than the dorms in the center of campus but it has a lot more green space and the 3 dorms overlooking the field and central dining area make it much more of a campus feel. The views are amazing...big windows with gorgeous views of the River and city skyline. Plus its nearer to the new Student Village area with the new arena and new rec. facilities. (Lazy River even)

Not if you are CGS or CFA....those are both very very close to the west campus dorms.

What housing option do Freshmen often choose?

are the dorms generally good or bad compared to other college dorms?

There are a varity of dorms including standard two person large dorm types that seem just like every other school you'll see---then there are nice 3-4 person suites with your own BR and joint LR and Bath. There are the brownstones on Bat Street Rd. along the river that are quaint Victorians of varying size and some are rather elegant. The South Campus is apt. style brownstones as well. West is 3 large standard dormns that share a DR and have a lot more green space and views. So it depends what you like. Some are more social and closer to the center of campus. Others are closer to the brand new Student Village area with all new rec and arena facilities including a Lazy River so it depends on what you like. Search around the housing section of the BU web site for details and pix and the "BU Backdoor" link mentioned in another post that has candid opinions on all of them.

I'm a sophomore, and I have quite mixed feelings about the University. On the one hand, I believe the education one can receive here is extraordinary. I consider myself to be extremely critical in my assesements of people in pedagogical positions, but I have found very few shortcomings in the professors I have here encountered. Some professors go so far as to provide full-page, typed, and lettered critiques of your papers. In short, I think the academics are extremely strong, as one might expect from a large research university. On the other hand, the place is not really all that fun. I am not exactly a party-animal, but I find the place to be pretty lackluster in terms of entertainment, even on the weekends. The school is also extremely large, and often impersonal. I personally, often feel like Im merely a number especially in regard to housing. Ive had really crappy luck, only this year making my way up to the bottom-of-the-barrel freshman housing.
