I’ll be a premed through the regular track. Both will be roughly the same price, since I got a half scholarship to Boston, and I live in Michigan. I’m not sure which one to choose. Both are pretty difficult compared to other colleges and I’ll be living away either way. Which do you believe would offer a better experience, more opportunities, and a higher chance to med achool? A TON of people I know dropped out of premed, had to switch to another career, etc. I have inside info on how hard it is so yeah.
For most people, UM will be much more fun. Its also more prestigious, but the prestige won’t help much for med schools who care more about GPA and MCATs. I don’t know enough to evaluate your likely GPA in BU vs UM.
I’ll major in either Psychology or Cell and Molecular Biology. Psych will obviously be miles easier, but I took HL Bio so I feel better about majoring in CMB.
I want to have a high GPA and MCAT, but also a social life. My high school life was pretty antisocial and I want to make sure that I have a good college experience. I don’t drink or go to parties or bars but I want a place in where I can make friends and be active.
Do you know if Boston pre-meds can actually go to med school? Like the percentage? Because at Umich, it is reeeeaallyyyyy hardddd. Like, insanity. I’m almost scared to even go there LOLL. One girl got a health problem, another girl (who also had a 36 ACT) had to stay awake for literally days, another girl ended up having to get married, etc.
And UM seems so tempting because it’s in-state and the social pressure. But idk
Since you are in-state I’d go for UM. IMO UM has the more typical college life and is the higher ranked school.
Watch the weeder classes at UM LSA like organic chemistry. They are always graded on curves which can hurt you if you have a talented peer group. If you take classes is a different college like engineering, nursing, kineseology or Ross you won’t have those issues. Any program can be pre-med.
If you are a high stat student check out the programs with guaranteed admission to medical school like Brown, Baylor and Rice. Unfortunately Michigan discontinued their BS/MD interflex program many years ago.
I’d go for UM if you’re in-state.
Dont know much about Michigan but as a grad from BU, I can say it was an excellent school.
Great, unique college experience in Boston.
BU is a serious school and not a party school,
but a great city when you need a break from studies.
Boston is a great city for internships at major hospitals, and research labs.
Not knocking Michigan, but the comments about ranking are silly. BU is one of the top ranked universities in the world. And as a private school,
you’ll likely have smaller classes than Michigan.
Is the BU scholarship guaranteed for all 4 years? Are there GPA requirements you need to maintain to keep the scholarship? BU is very expensive, and if you lost the scholarship for any reason, you may be put in a difficult financial bind.
Apart from that concern… I don’t think you can go wrong with either one. But they are very different.
UM: one of the best public universities in the country, one of the best college towns in the country, very rah-rah school spirit… I’ve never met a UM grad who didn’t absolutely love their time there
BU: one of the best college cities in the world, you literally are in walking distance of other great schools like Harvard, MIT, Northeastern… BU has a very decentralized campus that blends into the city… it’s not a very rah-rah school spirit kind of place, except for hockey… BU looooooooooves their hockey… if you want an urban campus, BU is hard to beat… it is close to very large number of hospitals, some in walking distance, so you will have a plethora of research and intern possibilities
Michigan is more highly regarded, but BU isn’t chopped liver – it’s also an excellent school with plenty of rep.
Since the money comes out about the same, I suggest that you choose based on fit. So compare the two on questions like these:
- Boston vs. Ann Arbor
- Vibes at both schools
- Food at both
- People at both
- Living situations
- Party scene
- Sports scene
- Weather
etc.
You got your BU admission decision and scholarship offer on 11/13???
No, I’m making a future scenario of what will happen.
How big are the class sizes at um? A
It depends on the major. Intro classes to popular majors or prerequisites to popular majors/professional programs such as medicine will typically enroll hundreds of students. This is not the case with Michigan only. Most large universities, including BU, will have large classes. Classes in less popular subjects will be small. Class size at Michigan and BU is never a concern. Students almost always receive the help they need, which explains their high freshmen retention rates (97% in the case of Michigan and 93% in the case of BU) and graduation rates (91% in the case of Michigan and 85% in the case of BU).
As others have suggested, both universities are excellent. But unless BU gives you generous aid/merit money, I don’t see how you can justify going there over Michigan at in-state tuition fees.
Yeah I’m going to um.
