Boston University Average SAT scores

Okay so i just checked the average sat scores for the class of 2021 and it was 1450??? I swear it was only around 1380 last year. What the heck happened is this true. :confused: I don’t want to believe it bc I was pumped bc I just got a 1390 and thought I was gonna be above average… Did it just get super selective this year? Should I retake the SAT’s even though I think this is the highest I can probably get?

BU doesn’t report all scores from all the Colleges. Still apply but to there extension/ continued education school. But yes overall BU was very competitive this year and you should retake. Also add some match/ Safety schools to your list.

@rachel97437 Yes, BU is stating that they just admitted their most selective class with the average now being a 3.8 gpa, 1450 sat and 32 ACT. I don’t know what the 50% range is but you aren’t too far from the average so if you think you can get the score up some with some prep time this summer, you can re-take it. Remember that it is not just about the SAT score so you want to make sure you have a strong application. Do a good job on your essays.

Those stats are for admitted students. The stats for enrolled students will be considerably lower, as they are for all colleges outside the top 20. BU has also cut the size of the September CGS class from 700 to 300, thus improving the overall averages.

It is the enrolled student stats that are reported to USNews and Moody’s.

Yes, those are the admitted stats but, just my opinion, it’s better for OP to aim high and be among the admitted than what is reported to USNews and Moody’s.

@rachel197437 BU Had a record number of applicants apply this year 60,000. They will have just 25% of these applicants as the incoming freshman, for a class of about 3,400. BU was very selective this year.To echo what @paveyourpath said, make sure you have a strong application. Also, make sure you have some safety schools you are applying to.

For what it’s worth, I was just on Naviance, and it reported BU’s acceptance rate as 25%, BC’s as 34%, and Northeastern’s as 32%. Not sure how accurate these percentages are, but that’s quite a difference in my opinion. Perhaps BU has many more applicants with 60,000? I do not know how many apply to BC or Northeastern. Whatever BU is doing is very interesting. Not sure what to expect for my daughter who will be applying this year with a 5.0 w, 3.8 uw, and a 1500 SAT. 720 Math II, 730 Bio M, 730 Bio E. ??? The Naviance chart shows that she should be a shoe-in when compared to others from her school, but I am not so sure. She will most likely be applying RD to the Sargent College.

@TomSrOfBoston does CGS count in admission percentage stats? If so, cutting from 700 to 300 would give them a nice bump down in admit rate. Any insight into why they cut CGS back?

@suzyQ

September CGS admits’ stats count, CGS January-London admits’ stats do not count. It serves to raise average stats and lower admission rates. It is BU’s version of Northeastern’s NU In option.

@TomSrOfBoston , just curious if the CGS acceptances for Sept. on the Boston campus are drastically down, have they been ramping up their CGS January-London admits?

@Winky1 The September CGS class used to be 700 students. Now it is 300 students with 300 accepted to the January-Lomdon program.

Are the stats out? Where does one find the current stats. Most web sites are a couple years old.

Thanks Tom.

Wonder why there is no big Boston article about BU gaming the rankings @TomSrOfBoston . They don’t require international students SAT/ACT scores in the admission criteria therefore don’t report them to USNews. They have an ever expanding January admit program - reducing the fall admit program of the very popular CGS - and now their admit rate fell to the 25% range. They have ED2 which is known to improve admit rate stats (when all the ED Harvard, Yale, etc… rejected students panic and go ED2 at the next highest ranked school).

@suzyQ7 Please provide a source for your statement regarding international students not having to submit standardized test scores; BU’s website specifically states it as a requirement for all students. Additionally, BU has historically had one of the best study abroad programs, so it makes intuitive sense to send more students to London as it is a more enriching experience with which to start one’s undergraduate career. Furthermore, many top schools are offering more diverse early application structures; it is a national trend. It is clear that you have an inferiority complex fueled by Northeastern’s highly publicized gaming of rankings to artificially produce prestige.

@undergrad2018

Freshman applicants are required to include standardized test scores - item #6 on the list below:

https://www.bu.edu/admissions/apply/freshman/

INTERNATIONAL students are ** not ** required to include standardized test scores - not listed in the international applicants list here:

https://www.bu.edu/admissions/apply/international/

English proficiency tests are not standardized tests (SAT/ACT).

How does t make intuitive sense to send students to London first? If it did, they would give ALL freshman applicants that option, but they don’t. Its only for the ones that they don’t want to include in the Fall rankings data.

Hello prospective BU student, current BU 2021 here! I would highly recommend that you retake the SAT just for extra security in the process. I can say that I know other people in my class that have scored lower/ around a 1390 and have gotten in, but most of the people (myself included) have scores around 1400+. Since you’re at a 1390 I definitely think you can score above a 1400 which just a little more studying, so don’t stress about it too much. But as you said BU and other colleges in general are getting more selective so I think better safe than sorry. Also I personally believe BU puts a great deal of weight on your essay in addition to grades and EC so make sure you work on that as well :slight_smile: if you have any questions let me know!

@undergrad2018 and @suzyQ7 .

It is true that international students are required to submit standardized test
scores. See explanation below.

My son applied to BU and was accepted and will be attending from here in Paris, France. He took both the SAT and the ACT. As you see from below the information states for international freshmen to “please submit your application and credentials as required for Freshman Applicants” and “In addition, international students are required to submit:”

INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS

Boston University defines an international student to be a non-US citizen or non-US Permanent Resident Green Card Holder. Exceptions apply if you are currently in the US in one of the following statuses: Refugee, Asylum, Parolee, or Confidential Entrant.

You are eligible to apply for admission to Boston University as an international undergraduate student if you’ve completed the equivalent of a United States secondary school education (approximately 12 years of formal education starting at age six) or are a GED recipient or completed a secondary school equivalency exam. You must have either an appropriate diploma or leaving certificates.

To apply to BU as an international freshman please submit your application and credentials as required for Freshman Applicants. (http://www.bu.edu/admissions/apply/freshman/ )

International transfer students should follow instructions for Transfer Applicants.

In addition, international students are required to submit: ( https://www.bu.edu/admissions/apply/international/)

It’s not less that international students are required to submit, it’s actually more. All My Best,
Parent In Paris

Thank you @ParentInParis and congratulations on your son’s acceptance!
