Boston University Common App Question

If you have not applied to the College of General Studies, would you like to be considered for admission to this program?

Is this sort of an alternative way to get into BU, if you don’t get into your preferred major?

Also, is it worth doing the Honors College essay and what are the stats needed to get in?

Can anyone offer their insight pls?

bumpppppppppp

CGS is sort of an alternative way to get into BU for some if your stats don’t meet the requirements of the other schools.

It would help if you posted your stats.

I have a 29 ACT (35 in math). 4.3 GPA. 300 volunteer hours. Leadership positions. I’m applying for mechanical engineering. But my questions is, does it hurt to put down yes to be considered for CGS? Like will BU admit you by your first major choice, then if you don’t get in, then see if you can get into CGS?

Like what are the pros and cons of putting down “yes” for this question?

If you have not applied to the College of General Studies, would you like to be considered for admission to this program?

bump @TomSrOfBoston

Engineering is not a major, it is a college within BU that offers different majors. CGS is also a separate college within BU. I guess it depends how badly you want to go to BU. Would you be willing to spend 2 years in CGS if you did not get in to the College of Engineering? I think you need to research what CGS is before you check ths box, and how would it affect your path to mech e.

Ok, but would they admit me to The College of Engineering, and then if I don’t get in, look at me for CGS?

Yes. Go to the CGS website. There is an excellent FAQ page and also course pathways to other programs as PDF documents. I think your stats are higher than average for CGS. That is one of the FAQs too – a stats comparison between CGS and the rest of the schools.

It won’t hurt to check off CGS on the app. If you are not admitted to ENG, you may be admitted to CGS. At that point, you could visit campus to talk top CGS staff.

Ok great thanks, and if I am admitted to The College of Engineering, they won’t bother to look at me for the CGS right? I don’t really want to be admitted into the CGS, but I guess it’s better to check it off on the app, then to get rejected.
