can anyone else familiar with BU weigh in on my chances of admission? Additional info: Mixed race, applying as international applicant

@TomSrOfBoston

I’m a student at BU, and I think you have a great chance.

Thank you!

@proudterrier

I think you had solid stats, including a nice upward grade trend. Great job on the ACT–that is a super solid score and much stronger than your previous SAT! And honestly? Being a full pay international will give you a boost. Is there a reason you prefer direct admit to CGS over applying to CAS or COM w/ CGS as a backup? I would apply to CAS or COM and just check the CGS box. Might as well shoot for the moon, right?

@proudterrier i feel like EDing to CGS would almost guarantee my admission at BU. Do you think I’m competitive at other schools such as CAS, COM, or Questrom? Thanks!

If you go in through CGS make sure your GPA is good your first few semesters because several of the schools (like COM) have GPA cut-offs for transferring into them.

If you are admitted to CGS ED you cannot request that your acceptance be changed to CAS, COM or nay other school within BU.

@TomSrOfBoston would I have a chance at COM/CAS/Questrom?

Your acceptance won’t be changed but you can transfer after you complete the CGS, provided your grades are good enough. Make sure they are good or you could be locked out of the department you want to be in. I’ve seen it happen.

Having a good chance at direct admit to CAS or COM depends on some additional factors. 1) as an international, how good is your English specifically your writing? For COM if you’re applying to anything but film and maybe broadcast JO, they’re going to look closely at your writing… but if it’s up to par, you’d have a shot. 2) with CAS depends on what you want to major in and the strength you present in that area on your app.

Questrom is pretty competitive; I don’t know if I’d gamble on direct admit to that one. But COM, while competitive, will take into account your talent displayed in your app package for the field you’re interested in. Since you’ll check CGS either way, they’ll put you there if you don’t make the cut, and either way you end up at BU. Win/win.

@proudterrier I’m probably going to major in something business related and not really interested in CAS/COM. Should I still apply to CAS/COM or should I just apply directly to CGS so I can get into Questrom in 2 years anyways? Thanks for your time!

I haven’t looked at the application in a couple of years, but I believe that you can apply to your chosen school (Questrom) and designate that you would like to be considered for CGS if you don’t get into your first choice?

@redpoodles I feel like Questrom is a reach for me so I’d rather not take the risk and just ED CGS.
