Boston University or Northeastern University?

I will apply to both, but to let you know, I want to get a masters and I also want to have various work or study abroad experience because I want to major in international relations/ foreign language. So I am looking at foreign language department, international studies/business department, study abroad, internships, campus vibe...and I also want to take ballet classes while in college, so....and recommendations? My college list is:

CA:
UC Berkeley
UCLA
UCSB
USC
Occidental
Pitzer
SFSU

NY:
NYU
Hunter college

Boston:
Bu
Northeastern U

D.C:
George Washington U

I WANT TO ATTEND AN URBAN UNIVERSITY - I have been stuck in suburb my entire life, and no religious affiliation

SAT:
W:650 (predicting 660-700)
M: 620 (predicting 620-640)
R: 530 (will do better next time 580-600)

What schools have good financial aid and high amount of graduates attending graduate school?

your sat scores might preclude some of your choices above (cal, usc, ucla etc.). what’s your major?

look at the University Of Pittsburgh

what about u of pittsburgh? Everyone I talk to says going to pitt is not worth it because it is a steel town with polluted air and and poor life(not interesting or fun)??? Actually, for ucla, my scores on in the low middle range, other than my current reading score

Northeastern Univ is very specific in nature: it’s all about co-op education, and that affects its vibe since at any given time a large percentage of students is off campus and working. There are people doing IR at NEU, but the school is predominantly known for its engineering/business/computer science/science education.

BU is a good school but also unusual in that it doesn’t really have a central quad-like campus. Classes can be scattered throughout different areas of the city; some people don’t mind, others want a more traditional setting.

NEU can be good with FA for those with very high stats - I’m not sure your SATs will be high enough. BU is known for its pretty bad FA. Plus, Boston is one of the most expensive cities in the country. If money is an issue, I’d advise against setting your heart on either school.

Since graduate school is in your future, I think your best bet is the very best quality in-state university you can get into, or a private that will give you lots of aid. Don’t worry about study abroad: most schools have good programs or if not, most will grant credit if you go on another (accredited) school’s program.

wow so weird how did you know I was going to post u of pitt so weird

Thanks everyone!!! I do not know how I will narrow down my list, I am now adding Univ of pittsburgh, but it is a public university…and it’s pittsburgh…I don’t think that city is for me. But who knows…

curleq94, Pittsburgh gets a bad rap for its past. They have completely changed the city and am building parks where the old steel mills are. It is no longer as industrial as it was in the past and it is now just a normal city. I applied to Pitt, went for a visit and absolutely loved it! You’ve gotta visit the city before you base your opinion on what people (who have never visited the city in the last 3-4 years I"m guessing) are saying.

As an OOS student you will not receive aid at Pitt. Count on paying the full fare - over $34,000/year.

Of course, that’s close to the cost of in-state at Cal and UCLA. (I assume you’re a CA resident.)

I guess I should just apply and when I figure out what colleges I made it into…I can visit…but my familty can barely afford it

Sorry to burst your bubble, but you may not be realistic about your choices. FIRST have the “money talk” with your parents. Tell them bluntly you’re looking at schools costing between $30,000-$50,000 a year. Ask them what they can afford. Have them calculate their EFC (expected family contribution.) Start reading - and have them read, or at least inform them - the financial aid threads on this site.
Do your research FIRST. Don’t apply to schools you can’t afford. It’s a waste of money, energy and time.

If your family can barely afford visiting these schools, how do you think they will pay for them?

Are you a California resident? If so, you should be first focusing on the UCs and privates that may give you aid. Looking at NYU (notorious for not giving students enough $$ - it’s the #1 reason why kids leave NYU) or BU or GWU - expensive schools in some of the most expensive cities in the country may not be realistic.
Can anyone post the SAT and GPAs for last years freshman class for both schools?

^^ Easily available on each school’s website and such sites as princetonreview.com or collegeboard.com

My parents make more 100,000 a year, but they have to pay for my older brother’s tuition, is this taken into the factor? And my little sister is only 3 years younger than me, so she will be factored into all the debt too. I have tried to ask my parents to figure out financial aid, but they never want to talk about how poor or rich we are. We live in a home that use to cost about 7 millions(parents built it), but now we are left paying the expensive bills and there is no money for me. My parents never saved for college even though we use to be millionaires…(I am a 1st generation, so that obviously reveals why they never saved or cared to think or their future…low iq)

Both these schools are not worth their sticker price, IMO. They are very pricey for their profile.

thanks katliamom … I will finally force my parents to sit down and do the financial aid calculator so I can see where I am headed

Yes i live in CA. But why Pitt? They have no diversity whatsoever…it is 80% white(collegeboard). What about Hunter college? I am so confused…I am applying soon and I need help…where the heck should I go? Private…public in state…public out of state?

OP, your scores may get you into BU, but not sure if you have the scores for Northeastern (it’s more selective). Depends on your gpa. What will your GPA be up to this point?

3.71 unweighted…3.93 weighted for my 10-12th grade( do not have senior grades yet though)

Total gpa academic and non academic courses: UW:3.70 and W: 3.84
