Hi, I was recently accepted to Boston University as a biology major to the college of arts and science but my excitement was curbed a bit when I saw the numerous posts regarding grade deflation at Boston University. Assuming grade deflation is true, how hard is it to get a 3.5+ or a 3.8 at Boston University as a pre-med? If one was to work extremely hard (no partying out, staying in on weekends, doing all the homework, reading the text book, studying 2-3 hours a night and going in for office hours), would this be possible? With grade deflation, is it possible to apply to top tier medical schools such as Harvard, Brown, Cornell etc? I consider my self decently intelligent but not incredibly so. I have around a 3.6 at a very rigorous high school (bad freshman gpa of 3.2-had a 3.86 senior year, have taken 5 APs and have an A average in AP physics, chem and biology) but I’m really worried as I don’t want to tank my chances for a high ranking medical school. Any input from current or previous Boston University pre-meds especially appreciated and any input appreciated as well!
My daughter is a sophomore at BU and is a premed. While the smartest of the smartest kids get A’s, many kids have to struggle to get B’s or lower. First year Chemistry scale their tests so the average is in the low 60’s. They do a good job of providing support for kids who want to learn and they make the average a B-. The Biology department however is horrid. Bad teachers and difficult tests make it hard for kids who aren’t whizzes to do well. If you aren’t at the top in your class and you want to med school, go somewhere else where you can get a better grade point.
