Do you think it’s a smart idea to talk about the independent major perspective on the why BU essay? In case you didn’t know BU gives its undergraduates the opportunity to create their own independent major. Would mentioning that as one of the reasons I want to go there hurt or improve my chances of getting admitted?

I think it could be one of the aspects of your essay and it won’t hurt your admission chances. If you discuss being undecided in a major, you could say that BU can give you a wide breadth of majors and minors. And then you can say they even go to the extent of allowing an independent major. But, most importantly, discuss other aspects of BU (student life, academic programs, clubs, and organizations, etc.) If not, you can think of an interest that you can maybe consider pursuing and talk about that. But, overall, it won’t hurt you talking about an independent major.
