So far I’ve been accepted into BU and GW but waitlisted at UNC. (and just want to know in case I do manage to get off the list). So its really between GW and BU.
Which college has stronger science programs? For now I’m undecided but I’d most probably want to pursue medicine or something like stem cell research. And undergrad research opportunities are also important to me.
I personally like BU but I noticed they only offer BAs as opposed to BS, so is there a significant difference? Would a BS be better if I want to pursue a science related career?
Email the department chair and ask for an appointment to discuss this over the phone. Then ask direct questions about how students can perform research, how many do so, are there limitations, how many labs have funding to take on a student, etc.
Look at the course catalogs and major requirements to see what courses are offered/need to be taken. Read professor reviews on ratemyprofessor. Ask to speak with a current senior in your intended major.
It’s the course availability, how well the courses are taught, and research opportunities that matter.
FWIW (coming from a practicing PhD biological scientist), I think the actual topic you intend to study (you say “stem cell research”) matters little in choosing an undergraduate college. The more important aspect is learning a breath of biology/chemistry and having the opportunity to be mentored appropriately on how to 1) develop a good hypothesis; 2) design an experiment to actually test that hypothesis; and 3) interpret the results.
Unless a cc’er has direct knowledge of both BU and GW science departments, you will get little useful comparative information here. It’s up to you to do the legwork to gain this knowledge.
If you intend to go to medical school, either BU or GW will get you there. It’s up to you to maintain a certain GPA and attain a certain MCAT score.
