Boston University vs. Northeastern University

Is it true that NU's science department is better than BU's?

Also, which school is harder to get into?

NU vs. BU science dept.? Don't know, but here are some acceptance stats to let you decide which is harder to get into.

NU:
percent admitted: 42%
Mid 50 SAT: 550-650 CR, 570-660 M

BU:
percent admitted: 55%
Mid 50 SAT: 600-690 CR, 620-700 M

Advice: Massachusetts is a very small part of the U.S. lol. Check out other parts of the northeast, ivy league, uc's, etc.

Northeastern is THE ultimate safety school - it's in Boston, how can that be bad? This is the only reason their acceptance rate is lower than BU's, other than the fact that BU is larger.

What he said. NU is ranked 110 or something while BU is close to the top 50...and should be ranked higher...

Northeastern University has 24,436 applicants and 27% Enrollment Rate
Boston University has 23,240 applicants and a 28% Enrollment Rate

BU was trying to enroll a class of 4,300
Northeastern was trying to enroll a class of 2,700

Northeastern's acceptance rate is lower because they are enroll a freshman class that is about 2/3 of BU's.

I would never rest on either school as a safety, when you are dealing with any private applicant pools of 20,000+:

NYU, BU, Northeastern, USC, George Washington, BC, or any of the Ivies...there are very few of them...

None of them should ever be considered safeties b/c the large applicant pools always have these school discarding great applicants.

Put it this way, Northeastern has more people to pick from than Harvard does, why would you rest your bets on a pool that big? My sister, 4.0 National Honors Society Student got into Brown, Wellesley, and Tufts but was rejected from Northeastern, go figure.

Im looking at those same two schools for biochemistry, and I just visited BU. I doesnt have much of that campus feel but I have heard it excells in the academic stand point compared to Northeastern. Im wondering about there science departments though too.

wow i just noticed this thread is from 2005. disregaurd everything I just said, i feel completely stupid now.

You probably heard that from a BU student. Check out the more recent BU and Northeastern threads. Northeastern has risen to 69 in USNWR while BU is still stalled at 56. SAT’s for entering freshmen at Northeastern are now slightly higher than those at BU, although the 2005 figures posted above were correct back then.

Northeastern has been on the rise. I would say you can’t go wrong with either of them… if they are affordable

This thread is from 2005. That said, Northeastern has a better science program than BU. It is interesting to see the reference to the old Northeastern ranking. It really has shot up in US News in the past few years. It is ranked in the 60s, while BU is ranked in the 50s.

Someone just came back from a Northeastern visit/tour and heard in the info session that, based upon the incoming class, the sat scores will rise 30 pts. next year.
