Boston University vs. UMass Honors

If money was not an issue, I would probably be going to BU. However, $60,000 compared to under $20,000 creates an obvious problem. If I went to BU, I would do Bio-medical Engineering which is what I truly want to do. In UMass, I’d be doing pre-med. Ultimately, I want to be a doctor and plan on going to medical school so i’d rather go to the school that gives me the greatest chance of getting into a really good medical school. I am not much of a partier so that part of UMass does not appeal to me. Anyway thanks in advance.

Biomedical Engineering at BU would probably set you up for very good career options right out of undergrad in case your plan for medical school falls through - what does “pre-med” mean? Is that the name of the major? Anything can be pre-med, even Art History or Film Studies, if you take the appropriate prerequisite science courses. If you decided against Med School at UMass, is your BA/BS marketable?

UMass Amherst Commonwealth Honors College is an excellent institution and program - many of the grads from the CHC go onto excellent high paying careers or excellent (read: ivy) grad schools. There are brand new dormitories for CHC students exclusively that are the envy of UMA. Literally every demographic can be found at Amherst - from the partiers to the studiers - so you don’t have to party and no one will pressure you to do such.

You will have excellent Med school options by going to either BU or UMA CHC. Just keep good grades and do well on the MCAT and you should be fine.

Also - I’d keep in mind the notorious grade deflation at BU that many kids seem to complain about. Just something to think about when considering grad school applications.

I had a question - you said that you had qualms with 20k vs 60k. How much of the COA at both schools will be financed by loans? If you’re planning on medical school, debt should be kept at an absolute minimum. Medical school is incredibly expensive and you will need to take out loans more than likely to finance it.
