I have been accepted to Bowdoin college for athletics as of early September, and I am still finalizing my list of schools to apply to. Because Bowdoin is a very good school that I like a lot, should I even consider applying to safety schools?

My List
MIT
Yale
Princeton
Columbia
Swarthmore
Amherst
UChicago
Wash U
NYU
BC
Rutgers

Should I simply not apply to Rutgers, NYU, BC, and Wash U because Bowdoin is a better school than those listed?

I think you might want to apply the lower ranked schools for Merit or full ride. If they give you that, you can make a decision then. OTOH, you will know it pretty late in the game and a lot of efforts.

Bowdoin only does early decision and notifications are in December.

You may have been positive encouragement from a coach or something about regular admissions, but nothing is guaranteed. Coaches at elite LACs don’t have 100% admission power.

As for your question I would go to Bowdoin over MIT, Columbia, Swarthmore, UChicago, Wash U, NYU, BC, Rutgers.

I’d have to think more about the remaining choices. I’m sure others would make different decisions.

Okay, that’s what I thought. You may be a recruited athlete, but that doesn’t mean that you have been admitted. Basically, if they have a spot open on the team, and three applicants are very strong, the coach will emphasize that he prefers one of the three possible players. At an elite LAC, the coach has SOME pull, but it’s not a guarantee, because Bowdoin is a D3 school. You STILL have to have average stats and good essays.
