Bowdoin College- Chance of Acceptance

Thank you for reading this- any feedback is greatly appreciated!

As a rising senior with my heart set on Bowdoin, I was wondering if anyone could give me an idea if I have a shot at getting accepted?

I lived my whole life overseas in interesting places, but am currently living back in North America. I used to play a sport at a very high level (National Champion in the past) but stopped in order to try new things and really explore opportunities.

I am a stellar student, the past three years my average has been a 93.2, however I am not a strong test taker. For the ACT I scored a 24 in English, 25 in Math, 30 in Reading, 25 in Science, and a 9 on my essay. That was also the first time I have taken it, so I'm hoping to improve, but most likely I won't submit scores to Bowdoin.

I will definitely apply Early Decision- as it is my first choice! I'm hoping to convey in my Personal Statement how Bowdoin for me is more than an institution. It was a place where I felt my personal characteristics matched the attributes they said Bowdoin students embody. All the logistics are exactly what I'm looking for, but more importantly it seems like the right "fit". I think I am the genuine, kind, modest, but driven student that they say they look for!

Thank you!

Thanks again!

We really just needed your grades, but anyway…

You only took one AP which might hurt, it will also hurt you if your school offered honors and never did. That being said I think the rest is fine and you should have a good chance. Also Bowdoin is test optional, so if you don’t get a high enough ACT score you should still have a chance.

Great thanks for your reply! Since this is a Canadian school there aren’t any Honours Classes, but out of the 5 AP’s offered at the school, I will have taken 3 of them by the time I graduate. I also forgot to mention that I am ranked 4th out of 90 students.

I know I don’t have “spike or brand”, do you think that will greatly impact my chances? From what I understand Bowdoin is very accepting of all types of people?

Personally I love them (I plan on applying) because they are very accepting/diverse. The nice thing about liberal arts colleges is that in general they have a holistic approach to admissions. What I learned when I went on college visits this summer (mainly top 10 liberal arts colleges) is that they will often reject a perfect score or somebody who is amazing on paper because they don’t think they had strong essays or because they did not seem passionate about attending. Focus on what makes you unique (I plan to focus on the diversity of my activities molding me into a person with a variety of interests that has encourage my love of learning). From my understanding the spike is often very different for liberal arts colleges because they are often more interested in your passions then amazing/ultra prestigious awards.

Thank you for your replies! I have also visited all of the NESCAC’s, so nice to hear someone else’s opinion! Good luck and thanks again.
