thanks!!!

they require SAT IIs, no? I know bowdoin doesn't require the SAT I, but I was pretty sure they require 3 SAT IIs.

I'm fairly certain that most of the successful applicants at bowdoin do, in fact, submit their SATs. Your AP scores are less than impressive as well...you're going to be up against a lot of kids with submitted 1350+ SATs and 4s and 5s on their AP exams.

I know I sound like a jerk, but I have a feeling you're a better applicant at Skidmore/Smith (both match-reaches), with hamilton, connecticut, and bates as reaches.

how do u pronounce "bowdoin"????

bo-dun or bow-dun (b "long O" done)

you pronounce it bow-din...and all testing is optional....that means no sat2s....and 25-30% of last years class didn't submit any testing

"and 25-30% of last years class didn't submit any testing" But out of that 25-30%, do you know what kind of applicants they were? I'm not being factitious, just asking. I'm guessing they had some stellar HS stats and other things that made Bowdoin want them.

The point I was trying to make it that just because they don't see your SAT scores, it doesn't mean that they can't gauge what sort of student you are. The debate champion thing, and your other great ECs, will most assuredly work in your favor. I'm not saying you have no chance, obviously, but I feel that your ECs might not outweigh your much lower than average statistics (lower than average for Bowdoin, I mean). I'd say it's a reach.

Hey! I contacted the Bowdoin tennis coach, too! I'm applying early decision as well. If we both get in, we might be friends. In my opinion, I think you'll get in. Remember, applying ED gives you a boost. My stats are around this board somewhere, and I got much nicer replies than you. (I honestly think you'll get in. You're stats are similar to mine.) Do you know if we hear back on December 15, or is it by the end of the month? Whatever it is, I can't wait. Best of luck to you.

Also, what type of response did you get from the coach. Mine wasn't so great..kinda like...hmmm you have potential, i like your attitude, so you should try out. It wasn't like....GREAT! YOU'VE GOT A SPOT ON THE TEAM!

Well, best of luck to you!!! I'll cross my fingers for you! Bowdoin is such a great school. I love it so so much.

Take care,
Katie

Hey there Camus:

I'm glad to hear that you applied ED to Bowdoin. :)

I'll most likely apply to Bowdoin ED II, that is if Amherst negs me. I even thought about switching my Amherst application to the RD round, but since it was sent a while back, I figured that if fate wants me to go to Bowdoin, I'll get defered by Amherst. Torn between that and having my college search end early. Because Bowdoin and Amherst applicants overlap a lot, most people can't go wrong at either.

Sara:

From admissions: Do not send SAT scores, if they are a bit below the Bowdoin average (1360-1370). They do have enough information to make a decision without them.

Hope this is of use. Good luck. :)

PS--It would be interesting if we all made it to Bowdoin, huh?!

Hey camus, that is so cool that were both applying ed and we play tennis...the response I got from the tennis coach was pretty much like yours, I don't think they can really gauge your skill unless you send them a tape (which I wasn't able to) but she did ask me for my transcript, senior course list and all my other basic info...stats...etc and I threw in a rec from my coach as well. I think we'll hear around the 15-17th...during that week sometime....It may be alter though, I've heard that some have heard as late as the 24th.....great christmas present huh? Did you send in your sat scores?
Well, good luck ttyl

P.S. Blaineko-with those stats I'm sure you'll have a home at amherst next fall...good luck!

Sara:

The question is: did I make the right decision to ED at Amherst, rather than Bowdoin.

Good luck to you--Bowdoin will be lucky to get you, and Camus. :)

Now for the LONG wait. I've been trying to keep myself busy, but...when I have a moment, what do I think about? My apps....I never knew I could be this focused. Heh-heh. :)

hmmmm...in my opinion I would have chose Bowdoin. I have seen Amherst alot (i live only a half an hour away), and the people at Bowdoin just seemed friendlier to me....ive heard amhersts social life is lacking...plus I thought the campus at Bowdoin was prettier...but thats coming from someone who wants to get out of MA, badly(!). It's ultimately what you felt better about, Amherst is ranked better plus there are more colleges around it, and the area is very diverse...northampton (the town next to amherst) is really great for shopping and realllllllllllly yummy food...and amherst always has great speakers come to campus, ive seen a few.. supreme court justices, past presidents great stuff...so there are pros and cons... theyre both great schools...but you'll probably get in...no worries....as for me i have finals this week...worried!!! so good luck don't worry and yeah...don't worry! im def doing too much of that right now

Sara:

Thanks for the info....I agree with you about the campus at Bowdoin...alot nicer than Amherst. Anyways, good luck on your finals. :)

blaineko, where are your stats?

I have a good feeling about getting into Bowdoin. I had a two hour long interview! Let's just hope.....

How were your essays? I wrote my teacher one in two days....you'll have to excuse me, I had mono for four weeks!!! (yes I know it's called the kissing disease!)

Camus...here are my stats,

Academics:
1490 SAT I (760/730)
750+ SAT II (6-7 subject tests)
3.99/4.0 weighted gpa
3/400+ class rank
4 APs (can only take a maximum of 2, junior and senior year)

ECs:
Swimming...4 years...Captain
Canoeing...4 years
Newspaper...3-4 years...various editor positions
Dance...4 years...various officer positions
Theatre (25+ productions)...4 years...various positions, and various roles
Student Government...4 years...various officer positions
State Student Council...3-4 years...various officer positions
District Student Council...3-4 years...various officer positions
Community Service...4 years...various officer positions
School, District, State Science Fair Awards...3-4 years

Recs:
Teacher 1: very good to excellent
Teacher 2: excellent

Essay:
CA...Very Good
Supplement...Very Good to Excellent

Also spoke with admissions officer twice, for about 15-20 minutes the first time, and 45 minutes the second. It was more of a casual conversation, and assured me that I would be a strong candidate in either of the ED or the RD rounds.

As for my essays, the supplement did not exactly answer the prompt. But, the adcom officer that I spoke with said it was to see if you had a thirst for knowledge, and that the supplement prompt was not a test to see if you could stay on topic. I was surprised, but pleased--I was going to attach a note explaining why I chose not to answer the prompt exactly and substitute another essay of my own.

I'm sure that you will have a good shot at Bowdoin, especially after a two hour interview.

Good luck on your ED app. :)

How in the world did you hear about Bowdoin if you live in Washington?
Also, I'm not the best at researching past posts. What exactly is your situation? Why did you choose, especially after such a successful HS career, to not attend HS?

Also, I'm not applying for financial aid. Will this help my chances? It's sad if it does :(

to not attend College! That's what I meant. My B, CC budizzles.

Camus:

I actually learned about Bowdoin because some friends of mine, and family friends suggested it. I did not go to college right out of high school because of an illness in the family, and combination of factors.

As for the aid question, it might help a little according to Mini. Bowdoin maintains that it does not matter when making decisions as they are need-blind.
