Bowdoin-like

Hi, I am a junior and I was wondering whether if those who were accepted this year ( or any other year i guess) would post what other colleges they applied to (and were accepted). Also, why you are going attend/not going to attend Bowdoin. Thanks in advance! :)

well, i was waitlisted, but maybe my list can help you out.

UVM-Accept
Haverford-Accept (i'm going here)
Kenyon-Accept
Macalester-Accept
Carleton-Accept

I didnt accept a spot on the waitlist because I liked Carleton and Haverford more.

Bowdoin- Accepted
Colby- Accepted
Middlebury- Accepted
Hamilton- Accepted
Amherst- Wait-listed
Williams- Denied

I'm attending Bowdoin because they offer the best comprehensive atmosphere. The outing club, social houses, great food, athletics, amazing dorms, friendly people, awesome location, etc. I was offered a research assistant position in the government department at Colby as a freshman, but Bowdoin is hands down the better school. It offers all of the same opportunites as the other schools I was accepted to, but I think I will enjoy my time more there. Their government program is also one of the best small college programs in the world. Hope that helps, and good luck next year!

Accepted: Bowdoin, Cornell, Vassar, Bates
Waitlisted: Dartmouth, Williams, Middlebury

I'm choosing Bowdoin because I love the outing club and every student on campus is obsessed with the school

Snucky, are you definitely choosing Bowdoin? Because I am/was also trying to decide between Bowdoin and Cornell (i'm 95% sure on Bowdoin).

Accepted: Bowdoin, Cornell, UChicago, SUNY Binghampton, Hamilton, Bates, Oberlin

Waitlisted: Amherst

Rejected: Brown, Yale

I have parents who were skeptical about liberal arts colleges so my list doesn't really have similar schools but I'll list some at the end

Bowdoin-Accepted
Notre Dame-Accepted
Vanderbilt-Accepted
George Washington-Accepted
Syracuse-Accepted
Amherst-Conditional acceptance(english req)
Georgetown-Conditional acceptance(english req)
Trinity-waitlist(warning:show interest in college apps)
Northeastern-rejected(another interest case and lesson no 2.love your safety and treat them like no1 I did the bare minimum and did not turn in any supplemental materials)

Why Bowdoin?Because it is the best school on the planet. But seriously firstly of you're interested in rankings:it is a top school consistently top 10, with top goverment department, top 20 placement to grad programs and strong sciences. I also liked the food, dorms, quality of life and happiest students on princeton review.College ******* was also helpful in fact Bowdoin was the recepient of the college of the year award this year. Take reviews and internet finding with a grain of salt though because campus dirt had info from like 4 years ago and put Bowdoin incredibly low.

Secondly to get a first class education with no TA's but with professors who know you and try to help you.Students who are more cooperative(take the oliver guy on these boards answering questions) than competitive and a unique learning environment with plenty opportunities for research though not a first priority but present like at orrs and kent island and much more.An education that is comparable with an any top college Ivy or not

Everyone there LOVES it.I'll admit something did not feel right when I visited but going there was still my gut feeling. They all gush about how there is so much to do on campus that the problem is choosing.I am a big city boy btw but Bowdoin gives me an opportunity to go out of my comfort zone and try different activities with no experience needed and sports I havent before without it being impossible(div 1 school). Also I believe your colege years you should make friends and be in an environment you can get taken care of not lost in and so I like that the location and activities bring students together rather than dispersing into the city. And if you want city Boston is only 2-2.5 hours away there's shuttles, portland is decent only 30 mins away.

This is personal to me but I felt the whole point of having a liberal arts education is to be open minded and I definitey saw that. I met people who took their religion seriously and people who were not religious and no-one seemed to impose anything on you or ostracise you because of it.My background(my country is very conservative) made it more amazing to see how openly gay people were accepted and there was no bias or difference.Im not gay and have never understood why people treated them so differently. The one thing I did not see but I'm sure is present as people comment on this a lot is preppiness. I saw a lot of sweatshirts/sweatpants and jeans except for 1 person. I may not fuly understand preppiness in US terms but from what I gather it means I saw none of that although I am against the notion of judging people based on how they are dressed. My host was the esxception. He was wearing a ralph lauren dress shirt but was a cool guy. If someone has the money to spend on expensive clothes and feels like popping their collar so what?dont hate its their perogative. Also some youtube videos which I found links for through facebook made me laugh and appreciate the originality of the students and how fun yet smart they are. I know someone who was absolutey wanted to go to Howard until I told him that the founder of Howard is a class of 1850 Bowdoin grad and although he did not get in he loved Bowdoin ever since considering the opportunities Howard has given black people especially graduates who came back to my home country.Wierd facts but mattered to me.

They do not lie when they say Bowdoin food is THE best and its organic too with some good vegetarian options...food that tastes good and is healthy for you.what more could you want? Also it was really safe to be walking around at about 3am I didn't even notice it was that late. I hear there is a good balance between work and party and anything else but I was there during the week so there was no partying happening which was a plus to me because I did not want to be somewhere with my academics in jeopardy and would appreciate a place with like-minded students.

I did feel like the students were smart when I sat in on a class but no-one flaunted their brains. There seemed to be a "if you got in you must be smart" notion so it was all chill. I met transfers from northwestern, cornell and someone who got into all the ivies except harvard and yale. And Bowdoin has graduated some very important figures in society(hawthorne, longfellow,a president) and is well represented in public service. A lot of students were top in the class and I benefit from an intellectual community so that was a plus for me.You are also not pressured to drink and although most people participate in sports you don't have to. Its as though Bowdoin is a microcosm of intellects and you will definitely find your niche. If you don't the Bowdoin name will help take you to a lot of places you may wish to move to

The only reasons not to go to Bowdoin would be if the size, location or major is not suited to your needs even though I feel size and location might not be as much of a problem when you get there.Personally I felt Bowdoin could offer me the best opportunites and more without a crazy competitive atmosphere and in an area where I can appreciate a lot that I have not been able to.As you can see from the length I LOOOOVE Bowdoin.ask me about this again when I enroll but I feel the feeling will only get stronger(if thats possible)

This is a long post so I will stop ranting but I had to convince my parents tolet me go to owdoin over Georgetown and Notre Dame so I have an email I sent to them and various family members which won them over and I would be happy to copy and PM them to you. Also visit in your senior year. Are you male or female beacuse I would be more than happy if you are still interested them to show you what an amzing community Bowdoin is in an overnight when Im finally attending in the fall!!!

Oh about the similar colleges from what I gather Williams,Amherst,Middlebury,Darthmouth, carleton, haverford(Brown?) most similar academics and otherwise. Less similar and less competitive but still pretty good:bates, colby, hamilton(these may not be accurate as I said I was not allowed to use app money on liberal arts colleges, funny how I'm ending up at one)

Nice post :).

hi, i am admitted to Bowdoin Class of 2017. and might have a consideration between Uchicago and Bowdoin. (I am waitlisted by Uchicago. ) Why did you then choose Bowdoin over Uchicago

Lucywow, this thread is from 2008, so those posting are likely finished with their undergraduate education.
