Bowdoin -- Sciences

How is the science program at Bowdoin compared to other major universities ?
Is it a pressure-cooker ? Are there (not to discriminate) a significant proportion of foriegn math-science kids ? Would triple-majoring be easier at Bowdoin or doing Northwestern ISP program. Would Bowdoin be a better choice in order to aim for a high graduate/medical school program ?

Please comment. Thank you for your time and help in advance?

You can't triple major here.

I wouldn't say there is a significant proportion, I'd say it's even across the board of majors.

I'm a CS / Biology double major with a math minor.

Bowdoin's science program is top notch. As a biology major, I can say that alot of the upper level courses are highly interesting. As for math-science forgein kids, there aren't many, most of my science and math classes are pretty much all white. The sciences at Bowdoin are in no way a pressure cooker, most people are eager to get together to study and many consult one another for laboratory help. That isn't to say that science course are easy, since most classes ask you to apply information to real world situations. As for sucess rates into med school approximately 91% of Bowdoin students that apply to med school get into at least 1 medicals school (which is pretty good considering nationally only 50% of applicants get into one med school). Likewise there is a high sucess rate in graduate school acceptances.

I know that Bowdoin Admissions may not look at SATs (pre request) for admission. But to get a feel of the "average" student at Bowdoin, what would be the mean SAT grade or aptitude level ? What one generally find in a student at Bowdoin? Good Academics, E/C, Research, Ability ? Compared to larger universities ?

What graduate / medical schools do Bowdoin students typically attend based upon their class ranking ? Are most attending top post-graduation schools (Iv ?!?!?).

Princeton Review Average SAT: 1400 (that's from the old ones)

It seems like everyone here has good academics, good extracurriculars, sports, and ability.

Anything in particular I should look or ask at when I tour the school in a couple weeks ?

If you're interested in CS, see if you can check out the robot lab.

I would also recommend checking out Druckenmiller and looking at some of the science labs. If you come on a Monday, Wednesday, or Friday I would recommend stopping into my microbiology class, my professor is fantastic.

How would you rate their biology department, and how does it compare to those at the other LAC's? I've heard that Bowdoin has one of the best. What would you say about the professors, amount of work, and access to research?

The department is fantastic! Some of the courses might be hard, but the knowledge which you gain from them is priceless. Currently, I'm in a microbiology class which is AMAZING!!! The professor is among one of the best that I've had in my life. All of the class tend to be very hands on in lab and exams in the classes make you think about real world situations (they don't want you to regurgitate information back). Work load also depends from class to class, some of the upper level course like molecular neurobiology or comparative neuroanatomy require alot of time because of their labs. However, upper level seminar courses are pretty laided back since most of them are based on scientific literature reading and have usually final presentation, instead of an exam. As for research, there are a good number of opportunities, once you get to know the faculty and demonstrate that you can think independently, they will take you under their wing and get you involved in their research. Bowdoin in general has the most biology classes to offer of all the LAC (I know this b/c I have looked through the Amherst and Williams Course Catalogues). All in all, you can't go wrong!

When I visited Bowdoin I dropped in on the Microbiology course (even b4 i saw your recommendations) .... ironically I was the only one (as a prospective student) answer questions .... was quite funny. But i decided to go to Bowdoin
