Bowdoin Vs. Amherst?

I was admitted by Bowdoin but waitlisted by Amherst, and I was wondering whether I should remain on the waiting list. Could anyone evaluate these two colleges in terms of popularity in the job market, internship opportunities, and academic strengths?

My intended major is sociology+economics, which one offers the better education? Also, I was hoping to pursue a temporary career in the finance industry before going to grad school, so which college can better prepare me for the future?

Thank you so much!

Mike,

While I do not have specific information regarding some of your points about Amherst, I can detail several things on the Bowdoin end.

The economics major at Bowdoin is pretty popular (50 majors in a graduating class) and there is an extremely active finance society, which weekly had alumni from all sorts of the financial sector come to Bowdoin to talk about their careers over lunch, conference call, or even present demonstrations. Some of our most successful alumni (monetarily speaking) have been major successes in the finance industry. Also, the director of the Career Planning Center focuses on helping students find finance careers/internships. If you are interested in finance, Bowdoin would be a great liberal arts college to attend.

The sociology department is not nearly as popular, though several students major in it every year. A recent figure stated that over 85% (higher than this I think) of Bowdoin students had a job/career 2 years after graduation, so doing well at Bowdoin will (almost) assure you a job after graduation.

There are plenty of internship opportunities in case you are interested, though I hear from many finance-interested friends that for a first-year student, finance internships are harder to come by, but they become much easier to get as sophomores.

bowdoin has a lot of alumni connections at Goldman, JPMorgan, etc. Each year lots of students get spots doing this. bowdoin in general seems to have a really strong alum network

you should probably visit the schools though. ive heard the food at amherst is bad, bowdoin has without a doubt the best food out of any school in the country

Nuf said! Enjoy Bowdoin (at least send in your deposit if you choose to wait)…

thank you guys for the help! I really appreciate it!
