My husband and I both attended Southern schools that had bowling alleys in the student center. Many of the midwestern schools son is looking at have bowling alleys as well on campus. Wondering if Bama has a bowling alley in the Ferguson Center or the Rec Center, or one nearby campus.

Stupid question, I know, because son is not even a bowler, but looking for more non Greek, non drinking entertainment.

Also, is there a game room in the student center, and what is in there? Are there pool tables, air hockey tables, or arcade games, pinball games?

Montegut: can’t help you with the bowling alley question, but I can tell you that there are pool tables & another type of gaming table (can’t remember which kind) in the common area at Ridgecrest. I’d have to think that other dorms & residences have something similar.

Bama Lanes is on 15th street, so it is possible to get there via campus transport and a short walk, but it is not on campus. There is a game room in the Ferg with a few things, but I rarely see many people in there. I know that the Ridgecrests and Lakesides have ping pong and pool tables on alternate floors and board games available to rent from the front desk.

I guess it would hurt Bama Lane’s business if a bowling alley were on campus. Bama Lanes is very close, just south of Coleman Coliseum near Hackberry.

Hurting an off-campus business has never been a concern of UA, rest assured of that. If the administration saw the need for an on-campus bowling alley as a critical component of their bigger plans, they wouldn’t hesitate to find a place for it.

I can understand that, I mean the school does allow 3rd party vendors and such onto campus which probably does negatively affect outside businesses.

When I visited Mississippi State a few weeks ago, they had a Barnes & Noble on campus that also serves as their school book store (text books were on the second floor.) The employees said that B&N were doing this on several campuses - contracting to sell the textbooks and also provide a regular bookstore on campus. B&N recently built a big store on McFarland, so I doubt they would want to mess with their sales by putting a store on campus that is so close by.

^^^ A lot of schools seem to be contracting out their bookstores to B&N. I think the Supe Store does a good job being UA-owned and operated. It may be just me, but UA has already contracted out foodservice and transportation and we have seen the problems of dealing with them (ie Maea). If anything, Amazon.com should operate a UA Bookstore.

Since the bowling alley is off campus, is there a putt putt course nearby? Now I know golf is big in Alabama, but how about a cheap place to bring a date, like a bowling alley or a putt putt course?

Tuscaloosa - Bama Mini Golf Admission: Age 13 and up $5.50. Hours: Mon.-Thurs. 4-10, Fri. 4-11, Sat. 10-11 and Sun 12-8.

I think for inexpensive dates, some go to the movies, some eat at The Strip, Downtown, or at Midtown Village outdoor mall, go bowling at Bama Lanes, etc.

There are also Entertainment Buses thru Crimson Ride (they’re also called E-Buses)… Get on board the Entertainment Bus Route. Crimson Ride buses will service the downtown area Thursday and Saturday nights 10 p.m.–3 a.m. and Fridays 10 p.m.–4 a.m. Cost is $2 (Bama Cash only) one way. UA students are allowed to bring up to two guests for whom they are responsible. Alcohol is not allowed on the bus. The new route will be called the Entertainment Bus Route, and it will run from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. on Thursday and Saturday nights and from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. on Friday nights. The route will go from the Hub, down the Strip and to downtown before going back down Bryant Drive and Wallace Wade Avenue to the Hub. E-Bus, as the SGA calls the new route, will cost $2 payable in Bama Cash only, and with that students will be allowed two guests.

The Tuscaloosa Transit Authority system is the public transit system for the City of Tuscaloosa.

I’m not sure what transportation goes from Bama to Midtown Mall. I wonder if there are any plans to have the E bus go to Midtown Mall? Does anyone know?

Would this Bama service take students to Midtown Mall area?

348-RIDE (7433)
The 348-RIDE (7433) is a free service that will transport you between locations on campus or between nearby residences and campus. Service is available when CrimsonRide Buses are not operating. While all calls are dispatched as soon as possible, high demand may result in delayed response. The service area includes campus and neighborhoods between Greensboro Avenue to the west, 15th Street to the south, Helen Keller Boulevard to the east, and Jack Warner Parkway to the north.

348-Ride Only goes as far south as 15th Street. Midtown Village is south of that, so some walking would be required. There is also the 348-Ride Express (a bus) to complicate things even more, but it is a perimeter-esque bus that goes around parts of campus.

I wonder if UA is considering expanding it’s weekend Crimson Routes to include Midtown Village. Midtown Village should contact UA to arrange such a possible route.

SEA_tide…do you have a car on campus? What do you do?

I know that another school she applied to (won’t hear back until spring) has a bowling alley, too. In fact, I see they have bowling as a Kinesiology class. That would be my D’s major if the were to attend there.

Kids do like bowling. DS1 has bowled at Bama Lanes which is just south of the campus. I have no idea if UA has considered putting one on campus. I would imagine that if they did, it would go near the rec center.

I wonder which dept would be the right one to ask. Hmmmm.
