box essay help!

are they looking for a unique never thought of answer to tht box question? arghh... need some ideas....food/restaurants, family pics, art, books..? wht if i put in a pic of a hot asian celebrity? ^^ haha they'll probably REJECT or be like wht the??

Honestly, the box should be the very, very least of your concerns. Put whatever you want. It's unlikely to affect your application in any appreciable way.

and don't spend a lot of time on it! just put something!

Three things you don't do:

1) A grain of rice
2) An acceptance letter from Rice
3) Putting something outside the box to show that you like thinking outside of the box

All of these things are overdone. Don't stress the box. I did, and I really doubt it helped me all that much. Most of my friends don't remember what they did.

NYSkins1, OMG I did number 3! am I doomed for rejection?...di tiy think they will they see this as "not following directions" rather than "taking a risk"?......

Are you being sarcastic or serious kornpopz?

what is this box essay everyone is talking about

on the rice app there was a box and you just paste a picture in it...is that the one

Yeah, this isn't evaluative, its just a way to indentify your application and will be used as an ice breaker if you end up going to rice.

Magerie, yeah, it's the same one.

so if i just paste a pic of my mom and sister in the box, it won't hurt me much? cause it is kinda unoriginal.

It won't hurt you at all. As far as I can tell, the effect of the box on your application is negligible.

Aspen, I was being serious....now that I reread my post, I'm not sure what came over me (I'm not usually like that, its just that the Rice app is due tomorrow, and I'm having intermittent panic attacks and dreams that maybe I forgot to fill in something)....Not so panicky this afternoon :)

I thought the box was really easy -- the moment I saw it I knew what to put it in...my favorite art piece given to me by a friend.

mikenthemaddog66,
The ice breaker...Do you mean that other students that attend Rice (incoming freshmen) will see the box you submitted?

I've yet to see the box anybody else submitted, except for a few anonymous ones that are on the front of the meet sheet.

No, other freshmen won't necessarily see the box. It'll just be: "What's your name? Where are you from? What college are you in? What's your major? What'd you put in the box?"

in my interview, the interviewer also said not to put anything offensive in the box (duh) or preferably, anything biodegradible/food-ish... for instance, one year, someone tried to send chocolate chip cookies. That didn't work too well.

^ Heh, I was told that story too... apparently it made a lasting impression.

Bump.

Don't stress about the box. All it's there for is a chance for you to give some kind of uniqueness to your application...one that might tie your name with your scores etc. It's not a huge part, but you shouldn't neglect or try something super-witty that isn't (read: lame). Like most of the application, you shouldn't read too much into it, but you also shouldn't neglect it.

Some cool ones I've heard of: Personal artwork always neato, a little pop-out box (probably an archi or something), intrigueing concepts, items from favorite movies.

Mine was simply a cardboard cutout of a can of Mountain Dew from a 12-pack box.

My favorite one I heard about? Apparantly somebody put a flap on one of theirs that said: WARNING! Remember I am an 18 year old boy!
The flap was liftable, to reveal a swimsuit model underneath.

I drew something in it and sprayed it with hairspray.

Hopefully, the hairspray won't start to smell bad. ;)
