box question

for the essay question with the box, did you guys write essays to go along with your pictures?

is the admissions office anticipating just a picture, or a picture+essay, or a picture+explanation?

just checking before i get started and do something totally unnecessary, heh.

I did soley a picture and I've seen several picture + explanation.

Picture + short-ish explanation is fairly common.

I had a sort of explanation (in couplet form) in my picture. It was kind of attractively pink and blue. (I made a code of a nice quote, using RSA... 'twas awesome). :)

I don't think it helped me get in, but it was wicked fun to try and make a code that worked based on all those equations and mods. I had fun on my Caltech application. :)

mine is a mix of about 250 words, some pictures, some graphic design... hehehe

edit: but the words are on top of the picture. I don't want to say anything more but I'm really psyched about it.

Will we be rejected if we leave it blank? I don't know what to put in it.

You won't be automatically rejected, but it's a pretty bad idea to leave it blank.

the box says to put something interesting in it. So just find something interesting :)

How do I tell if something is interesting?

If something matches up with the set of things you're interested in, you find it interesting.

Yeah, but how do I recognize the elements of the set of things I'm interested in?

Ask Google. Goole knows everything. Wikipedia knows most things, but not everything.

lol. i know a guy who graduated from CalTech and he was like...

"post office was going to close in 15 minutes and i had the box question blank! so I just ripped one page off from a science article and glued it one there.."

lol. he did get in.. so... it's a possibility???

So I should do google images and search for "interesting?"

One more thing: are we supposed to write an essay for the summer activities, a short paragraph, or is a list fine?

A list is fine for the summer activities.

Heh, I remember writing my essays 3 hours before my Caltech application was due. And they let me in somehow, so don't lose hope!

How did you choose what to place in the box? I'm utterly confused.

It's hard to choose, I know, but just put something that you are passionate about. Something that interests you. I can't say much more than that without telling you what to do, and then it won't be "your" box.

anything that you find interesting!.. article on some topic that interests you... or just write an essay and attach a photo with it or something for god's sake!! or even something at home.. you know.. that you LIKE AND "INTERESTED" IN??? i think it's fairly a very open-ended question that actually shows bit of your own personality...

Sorry. I just don't know how to tell what I'm interested in. I'd really like to apply but these open ended essay questions and boxes are really hard to figure out.

maybe something related to your major?
