Is there actual sparring and punching a partner in the boxing class?

in beginner i dont think so.

I took it last year, and am taking it again this year (I had to quit early because I broke my humerus playing basketball).

You don’t spar in the first class, but you do hit mitts that the other person wears. Let me tell you…I got in great shape after like a month and a half of this class (of course, I was in fairly bad shape when I started…not overweight or anything, just out of shape). I thought it was a lot of fun. You also practice like, dodging punches with a partner and things like that.

You work on a lot of footwork, punching excersizes, and some line drills. Again, I don’t know what you do for the second half of the semester since I had to quit.

You can join the boxing club as well, and I think you have the option of sparring in it. In the second semester of boxing I believe you are allowed to spar, since you have to get a physical to take the class. I definitely recommend it, I really enjoyed it!

A note to any girls wanting to take it - I was one of two girls when I took it; the class is made up mostly of guys. If you are uncomfortable with that…I would get a friend to take it with you.

Oh, and the coach is the man :)

more girls should take it to balance out!

I am taking it this semester and probably joining boxing club also. Definitely my favorite sport, and wish more people had an appreciation for the sweet science.

Than you for your responses. Can you get hurt though dodging punches or hitting the other person’s mott? Just checking to be sure?

I mean, theoretically - I guess you could. You wear a mouthguard when you really start doing it though. I don’t think that people get hurt or that anything like that really happens often. Coach didn’t seem too concerned (or at all)

Sorry to bother you again, but did you wear a mouth guard in the intro class?

cadmium - I sent you a PM about it, but I’m going to answer on here too, for anyone else’s info.

I did not wear a mouthguard, but we had just gotten the guards and handwraps right when I had to quit because of the broken arm. I am assuming that you start wearing them about halfway through the course.

The coach’s words were, “I didn’t plan on getting in a wreck on the way to work today, but I wore my seatbelt anyway”. Or something along those lines. I didn’t get the feeling that anyone really ever gets hit, but it’s just good safety to wear the mouthguard.

About the mouthguards and handwraps - you pay $20 to get the stuff at the beginning of the class, he gets it to you a little bit later in the course. You don’t need wraps until you start wearing gloves, a couple of weeks in.
