Are you putting Scouting under Activities or Community Service?
My son listed it under Activitities, but I think it should be Com. Serv. - I see his reasoning, as community service is only part what scouting is about, as the vast majority of his scouting hours have been for fun , skill building, education, and service to the troop. He sees scouting as benefitig HIM, more than the community. On the other hand, he's accumulated over 200 community service hours through scouting - more than any other service activity he participtated in during high school.
He doesn't want to put it in both places as he doesn't think that's what they (UCs) want. It wasn't a problem on the common app, as they don't make you break things down this way.

So what did you decide? It's like trying to pigeonhole your life - neither spot really fits perfectly.

I'm a girl scout and i placed it under activities. I think it is implied that it is also community service, and i agree with your son that community service is also only a fraction of what the activity is about.

I am not applying to the UCs but I am a Boy Scout who is in the process of applying to many common app schools. On the common app I designated scouting as service. This was partly because of my situation as I have approximately 200 service hours plus an extensive Eagle project (close to 100 more hours). I think that adcoms are familiar enough with scouting that they will be able to figure out what is going on either way.
