Boys State?

How good does Boys State look on a transcript. I am debating whether or not to participate.

I was a Boys State delegate and put it on my application. I would also like to know how it looks in the admissions officers' eyes.

looks better than sitting at the pool all summer, doesn't look as good as a 4.0 unweighted GPA.

you have to understand that all the pieces of your application are viewed in a different light for each candidate at each school.

If you have a choice, pick the one that appeals to you most, will introduce you to something new, will extend or deepen your knowledge in a subject of interest, allow you to pursue a passion.

so -- if you have to chose between boys state and something fluffy and fun, like a video game tournament with the guys, boys state is going to be the better choice. If you have the chance to take Calculus II at the local college or boys state, the Calc will probably look better if you are a math/science person.

take a look at your application (or what will go into it) and see if it complements your other parts or shows an interest.

My older son will hopefully be participating in Boys State -- however, he doesn't have a competing activity at that time and he has several other EC's in government, so it works for his application.

boy's state was the S H I T!

what state?

p.s. GO trust me (person you have never meet)

it was real fun. (at least in cali)

Well NJ, hmmm, definitely not the best experience, but just stick it out, it surely looks better than nothing.

I'm a delegate too. Cali FTW! :D

I'm a delegate from Cali also.

I was a delegate for Ohio Boys State...I'd definitely go if I were you

what is boys state?

It's this program made by the American Legion to combat fascism.

What fascism these days?... Last country was probably Spain, decades ago...

Boys State/Nation wasn't necessarily made to combat fascism, but more to compete with the fascism of Italy and Germany (and Spain) at the time. The AL was concerned that Americans didn't understand the value of democracy or how it worked and as such worked to train young Americans in the art of democracy, in fashion similar to how fascists indoctrinated their young with fascist ideology. It worked to strengthen and harbor democracy in the US.

^^ versus communism, etc.

do they send a student from each school, because i and two other students from my school were delegates and each of us were told we were alternates?

Just go to it. It's not extremely impressive, but fun. Very right wing in the midwest.

well if you you get picked to go to Boys Nation then it would be pretty prestigious.

At Boys State in Ohio, there was somebody from MIT who said that the admissions committee takes your participation in Boys State to mean that you are one of the top leaders in your school. This may have been an exaggeration on his part or maybe not, but it must mean something.

I'm guessing it varies by state, I know in NJ, at least specifically for my high school, we sent 8 and had 8 delegates, so...

in cali at least it was one per highschool

yet that still amounted to over 1000 kids
