Bradley University

Can someone tell me about this school?

There's some info on this thread:
<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?p=2535320&highlight=bradley#post2535320%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?p=2535320&highlight=bradley#post2535320</a></p>

I thought it sounded like kind of a nice little school.

Thank you, weenie. I am interested in finding out about Slane College of Communications and Fine Arts for undergraduates. Also, it seems as though most students are from Illinois. What % of students attend from OOS? Might someone from the Northeast feel out of place?

I don't recall too much about it but do remember it was on our radar for a while last year in our college hunt when we were limiting ourselves to the midwest (S actually ended up out east this year). I believe it has some high rankings by USNews - on the A+ schools for B students list and also the Best Value list for midwestern universities at masters level so I assume they must give some good merit aid? I remember one thing that turned me off slightly was my impression that they had a fairly large greek community - close to 30% (I wanted my S to avoid joining if possible because I knew he might be easily drawn into the drinking culture that often exists) Not sure how they are at Bradley though...

According to US News, 11% come from out of state. The good news - oh my gosh people in the midwest are super friendly.

Frats 28% (seems to be a "normal" percentage - ugh).

US News ranking: Universities–Master's (Midwest), 7

Merit aid: Avg. merit award (% awarded aid) $10,521 (21%)

I wish my son had applied there - but he hasn't and he is adamant that he's DONE with applications.

If you are interested in Bradley, you may want to look at Butler in Indianapolis also. We visited both. My knee-jerk reaction was that Butler was less of a Greek/party environment.

momoftwins, thank you. I have not even begun to look at schools in the midwest. My older son did not want to be that far from home. My younger one is telling me that he can't get far enough away, LOL. He also has a lot of time, and when college becomes a reality for him down the line, he may change his mind.

I am looking for schools with a good communications department. He might be interested in multi-media, advertising, and perhaps a business major. He is really a congenial outgoing type of person who enjoys the limelight.

Hi again Northeastmom-
Bradley is listed on one of my favorite websites-
<a href="http://www.collegesofdistinction.com%5B/url%5D">www.collegesofdistinction.com</a></p>

This website really does target interesting yet not very well known schools. Hope the info is helpful.
PS- d's school is on this website too!
Click on site map by state or region and a bunch of schools come up.
Most of these schools seem to be small to mid size schools- where Professors teach and not too much reliance on TA's.
Butlers on this site too.

Marny, Thanks. LOL, it has been so long since I looked at that website that I forgot about it!

BTW, as we get closer to formulating a list, I know that the schools with a large number of students involved with frats will be crossed off. I know that my son would be one of the first in line to join a frat if it were big on campus.

I know you have a few years to go, but I have a hunch Syracuse and Ithaca are gonna be schools to consider. D's good friend is at Syracuse- Newhouse School of communication. So far all the feedback that I have heard has been positive.

marny, I kept thinking that Ithaca seemed to be a perfect match for S #2 when we toured it for S #1. It is a much better fit for my younger son, but it was a good fit for my older son as well. This school will be on the list. Thanks. Newhouse is much too competitive, so we won't even look at it.

My older brother graduated from Bradley and absolutely loved it. He ended up going to a top law school and said he was well prepared. In fact, he did pretty well in law school. Anyway, the greek scene is pretty big, but no bigger than at most schools. Academics seem to be what you make of them - the opportunities are there if you want. It is also not too hard to coast a bit. Engineering and communications are strong, as is business, particularly marketing. Bradley has a good name with employers in the middle west, particularly Chicago and St. Louis. If you want to settle in the middle west and can't get into Northwestern or the University of Chicago, Bradley is a place to consider.

Thank you for the information. I knew that engineering was pretty good, but I did not know about the departments that my son may be interested in (communications, business). How would one feel if they attended from out of state? We are from NJ. Is the school trying to get more students from other parts of the country?

My brother graduated about 6 years ago, but I know he had a number of friends from out east. I don't know what the percentage is, but I'm sure you could check. I would expect Bradley is trying to broaden its geographic diversity.

Thank you.

I forgot to mention, I would imagine an out of state student would feel right at home. Peoria is actually a pretty nice, mid-sized town, and the people of the midwest are well known for their friendliness. Your student would most likely really enjoy being out here for a few years.

Peoria, does look like a nice area. I also like the convenient public transportation provided in the area. I was only wondering how comfortable a student from OOS would feel on the campus.

The St.James Apartments are really convenient for students because you are close to campus. However, the parking rules for St. James are very inconvenient for students living in 2 and 2+ bedroom apartments. Each student does not receive a parking permit, leaving roommates deciding who will get the parking pass. How do we provide more parking spots for students living off campus?
