Bdwymom,

btw, Theatermom, yeah BdwayMom's lovely D is PSUCat.

BdwayMom.... I agree that many of these kids' paths are going to cross either during college or afterwards. Even before entering college, I just know that my own kid has many close friends from a summer program who live in various parts of the country and they remain very bonded and I think will be for life. Therefore, she has theater buddies at NYU/Tisch, CMU, Emerson, CCM, UM, Boston Conservatory, Ithaca, Syracuse, BU, UMiami, as well as various liberal arts type colleges. I know she will remain connected to these kids and possibly even meet up at their various campuses. I think eventually they will come together again in NYC or elsewhere. Add in people you meet at auditions (or on CC!). I mean your D is the only kid we know at PSU. The MT world is smaller than we think.

It is funny your mention of the kids supporting and going to shows at each others' schools. I recall at the Sweet Charity production at PSU that your D was in, that sitting right in front of my D were some boys who go to UM MT's program whom she had met previously when visiting UM and they all recognized one another. This is not even counting that my own D was sitting with a boy she knew from FL who she ran into at the PSU audition. A funny thing also was at her CMU audition, she had to sing for three different people in three different rooms and when she got to the third one, she walked in and a boy was at the piano to accompany and the two looked at each other and the boy realized he had seen my D before when she was visiting/auditioning at UM and this boy, as it turns out attends UM (have NO idea why he was the piano accompaniest at this CMU audition) and he remembered my D and they started to chat and another nice thing was that one of the songs she was going to sing was from a musical he had just played for or been a part of at UM. So, these are not even kids my D truly knows but already, it is like a little "network" out there, eh?

Susan

Theatermom, my darling D kind of "lost" what she is supposed to do to sign in to post a reply on the new site, so...yes, that is her and she still reads this site all the time, just doesn't post!

Soozie - There definitely is a network of kids (and parents) that just grows and grows each year. It will be interesting and fun to watch them as they move on in their future careers and who ends up working with whom, etc. Hopefully we'll all still be posting away and have LOTS to share with each other and brag about.

Congratulations to everyone on their great accomplishments!! I have a brag today. I was accepted as a cherub at Northwestern High School Institute (for the theatre division and the two week musical theatre extension) for summer 2005! I'm so excited! It was a good confidence boost after coming back from a visit to Yale this afternoon and starting to have those demonic thoughts- you know the ones I'm talking about- the "Everywhere's so selective, I'm not going to get into college!" Thanks to all of you for being such a supportive network. It's so funny that aside from my parents and my best friend, my CC buddies are the first to hear my positive summer news :) -- I still have to hear back from CMU-- But I'm pretty sold on NHSI! Congrats again to all your amazing wonderful talented children!

That's great news DizzyDani! We know several students who have attended in the past and they liked it quite a bit. Hope you will too!

DizzyDani, YAY!!!! I am SO happy for you and I am glad you shared this wonderful news! I can't think of anyone more deserving. You are a mature and thoughtful (and apparently talented) young lady and I bet this is gonna be such a great summer. One friend from camp went to Cherubs at Northwestern her last summer of high school and is now at UM for MT. Actually come to think of it, I know a boy from camp who also did Cherubs and is now at Harvard. And don't worry on the college stuff....you know that the schools are selective and you are aware of the odds, but I feel confident a very good school WILL work out for you, so keep the faith. I think you are going about your selections thoughtfully and wisely. If you ever want to visit Brown, be sure to let me know and I am positive my daughter there will show you a good time and get you connected with theater peeps. Another of my younger D's friends at SD just visited Brown a few days ago and met up with my older D in fact (he, like you, is pursuing selective liberal arts colleges/universities that are strong in theater but not going for BFA programs).

Anyway, I am so glad things worked out for your theater plans this summer and sorry to not be able to meet you at SD after all these posts this year, lol. But maybe next year, when my D is in the city, and since she will be at CAP with your friend who is also HER friend, you two will finally meet ;-).

My best wishes! Celebrate girl!
Susan

Dani,
My D was a theatre cherub in 2002 and it remains one of the most influential experiences of her life so far. It was the first time she spent extended time with others who shared her passion for this work, and she was challenged tremendously by the faculty and experiences she had. I'm certain you will find it a life-changing summer. You will work HARD, but will gain a huge amount of training and insight into the work. I can't say she would comment that it was her favorite experience because the summer was very intense and demanding, but I know she feels it was extremely important in shaping her decision to pursue this craft.

Musicalthtrmom, susan, and monkey--
You guys are the best!! Thanks so much for the warm wishes and kind words. I'm so looking foward to this summer and the things I'll be exposed to. It really looks like I'll be having a fabulous 7 weeks. I so appreciate the support. Congratulations again to your incredibly gifted daughters. I've just gotten a taste of the thrill they must be feeling to know they have 4 years of this ahead of them. XOXO!

Dani

Dani,

Congratulations on your aceptance to Cherubs. I hope you have a wonderful summer. Try to keep those "demonic" thoughts at bay:) You will get into college. Just apply what you've learned here at CC when you deciding where to audition and apply all that great training you've had in H.S. and will have at Cherubs or CMU (crossing my fingers for you) and you'll be fine. I truly believe that if you audition for 1) enough programs and 2) a range of programs, you will end up in a good place where you are appreciated for the talents you bring to the table.

I wasn't quite sure where to post this as the number of threads has gotten so huge that it makes it hard to find what you want. In a slight digression, I hope everyone will continue to look through the pages of threads and make sure there isn't one already started on your topic before starting a new thread. The more threads on similar topics that we have, the harder it will be for others to find specific information in the future. Just a thought - not the subject of my post.

My D has been in NYC all week with lots of UM friends and classmates, going to as many shows as they can squeeze in (and afford!). They also went to the UM Senior Showcase yesterday and said it was very well attended by industry folks and UM alumni working in the city. She then proceeded to tell me how many UM grads are CURRENTLY working on Broadway and I was amazed. Just to mention a few in leading roles: Gavin Creel in La Cage, Jennifer Laura Thompson in Wicked, Erin Dilly in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (just nominated for a Leading Actress in a Musical Tony!) and Celia Keenan-Bolger in the 25th Annual Putnam Spelling Bee (ALSO just nominated for a Tony as Featured Actress in a Musical and whose brother was the original JoJo in Seussical and is currently a rising Junior MT at UM). They also met Hunter Foster, (who just finished a short stint Off-Broadway in Modern Orthodox, and who was nominated for a Tony for his work in Urinetown) and Barrett Foa (from Avenue Q). All Michigan grads. Before the UM Showcase preview in Ann Arbor, Brent Wagner stood up and listed at least 20 Broadway shows that included UM grads just this season!! Not to mention the regional productions and national tours. So this is my little UM brag. What a great program and what wonderful talented graduates!! Go Blue!!

Dani,

Congratulations on your acceptance to NHSI Cherubs. It will definitely be a life changing experience for you. My daughter was a cherub the summer of 2003 as I have mentioned in previous posts. She grew immensely, both in her craft and her personal life, during the summer of 2003. She also made friends for life with many of those in the Cherubs. The Cherubs program also assisted her in choosing a program, NYU Tisch. In fact, I believe there were 16 from the summer of 2003 who were admitted and are attending NYU. Several in Cap 21 and Strasberg studio, among others. She applied early admit because she was so sure the fit would be right for her and was admitted. Unlike so many of the other students you read about on this website she was quite sure where she wanted to attend and unlike what many people suggest, her audition for Tisch was her first audition. The next day she auditioned at Fordham also, but since she was accepted to Tisch she just counted that as a fun, informative day in her life.

Our d has just completed her first year at Tisch in the Strasberg studio. Although she attended the musical theatre extenstion at Cherubs she felt strongly that she preferred a drama intensive studio over Cap 21 and asked that they not place her in Cap 21, even though her parents made the awful mistake of signing her up for a MT audition. She requested Strasberg and that's where she was placed. It has been an amazing fit for her. We, as her parents, have been astounded by her incredible grades and work ethic over the past year. We knew she had a passion for this, but we also knew that living in NYC could be very distracting. Somehow (I believe by only sleeping three hours a night :)) she has made an incredible circle of close friends and had a great social life, in addition to her studio and school work. She loves the program and the instructors at the studio, as well as her other professors.

I know when you finish this summer you will have begun an incredible journey towards the accomplishment of your career goals. Good luck and have a fun summer in Chicago!!! :)

Hi, congrats on getting into NHSI. I've just been looking around the internet for stuff about NHSI, because i got accepted into the program as well (including the Musical Theatre extension) and have been trying to find out more about it. what have you heard so far?

Theatredivasmom- Thanks for the congratulations. I'm so glad your D has had such success and had a great experience with the Cherubs program. I'm VERY excited and know it will be a changing experience for me. It's great also to hear she made such close friends coming out of the program, I find theatre friends to be the very best kind :)

GReddy- Well, I've heard a LOT about the program from people on this board and kids I know who've done it. It sounds amazing. Are you a boy or a girl? Do you have any specific questions?- I doubt I'll be able to answer them, but I'm sure someone on this board will!

I am in fact a boy, and yeah, i have heard a bunch about it, but i was curious whether or not anyone knows specifics. Right now i'm crazy cause i'm looking forward to it a ton.

I got the part of Liat in my theaters production in South Pacific, and I know it doesn't sound like me much to you all, but it means a TON to me.

Congratulations theaterbrat! You must be sooo excited. I'm sure everyone here is happy for you, too. That's what this thread is for...support!

Guess who auditioned hoping for an ensemble role in Hamlet and got Ophelia instead???!!! Its with an AEA Guest Artist Theatre, Hamlet is Equity (hes very nice and ... HAWT!!!), Gertrude is my voice coach from last summer, and most of the rest of the cast are profs and grad students!

So much for my nighttime banquet waiting gig this summer WOOOOOOT!!!!

O my lord, my lord, I have been so affrighted!

Thebo, I'm IMPRESSED. Further, I am so happy for you. May this be a wonderful theatrical experience for you and a stepping stone to more work on stage in your bright future. CONGRATS! Thanks for sharing!
Susan

Congratulations Thesbo!!!! You have always impressed me with your posts on this forum. Clearly, you are an intelligent, dynamic, and realistic young artist, already truly committed to your craft. As essentail as your future training and education will be, working among professional Shakespearian actors will allow you to learn and grow in amazing ways. I wish you the best as you begin an incredible new journey!

Congrats on such a great role! Boy, you will have your work cut out for you, but what an experience, and just before starting college!

What are the particulars about this performance....the who, what, where, when, etc.?
