I currently go to Howard University and am looking to transfer to UVA or UNC next year. I also have braids and am thinking of making them dreads. What are your perceptions of those with my hair? Should I cut it, people are telling me it's intimidating to non-blacks?

I'm just looking for honest opinions, por favor.

Do whatever suits your style. People should like you for you, not your hair. If that is so, tell them to go study at a hair styling college [if that even exists]. I dont know why braids would be intimidating.. its not like you are going to pull them out and hit people with them... kinda silly

I don't find dreads intimidating, but there are definitly some people who do. If you don't want people to think you are "thug/ghetto" then don't get dreads. However, I doubt you want to be friends with people that stereotype you based on your hair style. So if you want dreads, I think you should get them.

Braids and dreads are both pretty cool. Wished that I see some more of those on campus. Just never shave your head and you'll be cool. For the record, human babies are not that cute.

I think dreds and braids are both ok. They shouldn't be intimidating to other people if you carry yourself well and don't dress too hood on top of that, I suppose. Just do what you want to do, and see how things work for the first few weeks. There's always the cutting option if you decide that's not going to work in a different environment.

Joe5333, you should wear your hair however you want to. You're in college. Do want you want to. People should worry about more important issues than other people's hair.

Now, if you were trying to get a job, well, you may have to revisit this depending on the job you're pursuing. Artsy organizations would be cool with dreds, I think, but corporations probably would not.

I don't know if braids are bad on men (they are fine on women) but definitely the dreads may keep you back in the corp world. I read some things about it.
