@dabambino
those questions you aaid that you emailed them about are acually all of same questions that I have. . . Let us know what they say if you hear back? I got accepted and am still trying to figure it out

still no answer back to my email… disappointing.

finally got a reply. here it is, for all of you that had similar questions as myself:

-Many thanks for your insightful questions. We hope we have been able to answer them thoroughly below. If not, please contact us any time.

I would like to begin by addressing how incredibly honored I am to have been accepted to this exciting Global Youth Summit coming up this June. My excitement was incomparable when I was informed of my acceptance and I cannot wait to arrive on campus at Brandeis to begin this wonderful experience.

With that being said, I do have several questions in regards to certain details of the summit.
First and foremost, I have been wondering a lot about the activities in store for us during the event. Specifically, I would like to know more about the visits we will be making. The itinerary denotes visits to both medical schools in the area and to clinical institutions. However, I would like to know, what schools/hospitals will we be traveling to? Also, what is the general plan once we have arrived to these places? Essentially, I am asking for a more detailed explanation of these trips, just to get a more accurate picture of what exactly to expect. Also, will we be doing any sort of hands-on procedures at any point? Clearly not on live patients, but is any sort of active practice going to be initiated? That interests me greatly.

-The Summit takes full advantage of the wide array of high profile medical institutions in the Boston area to provide a variety of visits. Participants will
attend these visits in smaller groups, so we can’t predict at this early point which venues specific students will attend. Activities at the facilities varies widely, with the goal of the conference focusing on preparing you as leaders in health and medicine. Medical procedures and other “flashy” activities are secondary to gaining a deep understanding of the opportunities and challenges presented by the rapid changes occurring in the field. There are many programs that offer a more vocational approach, similar to training for EMT fields. While some of these types of activities may be available, the mission of the conference is more academically challenging.

Also, I have questions about our interaction with the named medical professionals also to be in attendance in June. I have the utmost respect for these individuals and their incredible accomplishments, however I am wondering how often/on what level we will be able to converse and share ideas with these people. Will there be any smaller, more focused classes led by these people during the summit, or will our only chance to talk and discuss things be during large lectures? I would like to know this information, again, to get an idea of what this summit holds for me.

-As a participant you will have small and large group sessions, both individual speakers and panels. A number of opportunities for interaction, formal and informal, will be possible with some of the board members and speakers, while others will only be able to attend smaller portions of the Summit. The program is designed along the best experiential learning curriculum models, so expectations are high that all participants will prepare ahead by reading the conference materials and nightly assignments, and be prepared for highly interactive sessions. In addition, in small groups you will also participate in a series of intensive simulations, such as conducting a ethical hearing on a critical case. Throughout the summit you will also participate in small group sessions led by an accomplished faculty mentor where you will reflect and provide feedback on the speakers, activities, or simulations you have experienced.

Will this summit hold any academic merit for me in the future–for instance, on a college application? What value am I receiving by attending? What will I take away from this experience?

-Our Executive Director, Andrew Flagel, Senior Vice President for Students and Enrollment at Brandeis and a former Dean and Director of Admissions,
offered this response: “It is unlikely that any summer conference or activity has a significant bearing on your college admission simply by being selected and attending. It is really what you get out of a conference, activity, or program that can, perhaps, be beneficial to college admissions. That being said, Brandeis would not select students for this program if we did not believe that you have potential as a future Brandeis student. Our hope is that you will gain a better understanding of the challenges and opportunities created by the rapidly changing field of medicine and health. By providing a broad approach, encompassing leading scientific research, clinical medical practice, and shifting health care policy, we will begin preparing you to be a leader in a field where far too few have this wider view. As you build a network of outstanding peers and potential mentors, we hope that you will be part of realizing the enormous potential of the medical and health fields for improving the world.”

Lastly, I would like to know the details concerning who I will be rooming with–if anyone. Will I have a roommate? If so, are they randomly chosen by the staff? When will I be informed who this person is? As you may understand, these are important questions for me if I intend on attending the summit.

-All students are housed in secure Brandeis residence halls. There are a limited number of singles, and room requests will be honored if possible on a case by case basis and in the order they are received after registration. Once students are registered we will make housing assignments and hope to have roommate assignments out with conference confirmation materials.

I would greatly appreciate if I could get a reply as soon as possible, for as you may know, I am pressed for time in making a decision on attendance (the 5-day deadline for the $280 deposit noted on the acceptance e-mail), and this requested information quite heavily influences my decision.

-We thank you for your interest in being a delegate to GYS. We hope to welcome you to Boston this summer.

Hope this helps you guys come to a decision!

@dbambino:

Awesome. I’m glad to know my previous responses weren’t that far off into outfield. Thanks for sharing! I just submitted my application yesterday so I’m awaiting a reply. Also, I don’t believe this summit is first generation… I saw a post regarding this that dated 2011.

@dbambino and GhostHeart131

I understand the waiting period for your application to be reviewed is 5 –*10 days. How quickly did you both receive a response (to your completed application)? A little excited now that I’ve received a confirmation email. I will update on the status of my application when I receive a rejection/acceptance email.

Thanks so much for posting the reply! That answers so many questions!

@hallowdreams

i got mine about a week after sending in my application! good luck to you!

@all

im glad to be of help, and i’m happy to see that this was as beneficial to you guys as it was to me. hope to see you there!

@dbambino:

Alright! Thank you.

@dbambino:

Yes! I was accepted. There’s still a few other factors in play so we shall see but I look forward to seeing you all there.

I meant to say @all.

Do you have to pay the deposit within 5 days of acceptance? I applied for a few other programs whose decisions come out mid- to late-April, and I received my acceptance email yesterday.

I got my aceeptance email two days ago, but i’m still not sure how legitimate this program is. Does anyone know someone who’s gone before or has anyone started paying yet?

I don’t know of any one that has gone before, but I am planning on going and have paid the $280 admittance-fee thing.

@all
Hey everyone I also got the invitation in the mail and got accepted, so I have started the payments and plan on attending. I am also pretty wary on the whole situation, but the valedictorian of the current senior class at my school (I’m a junior) is attending Brandeis next year, and I know it’s a reputable college, so I would hope they wouldn’t tack their name onto an illegitimate program. I hope everyone finds out more information and keeps this going, because I would love to at least know a few people going into this thing with me. Thanks everyone and good luck!

I just got an invitation by email, and I doubt I will attend. It seems like too much money especially since I live in Cali, but oh well… I also got invited to NSLC, but that is pretty much a scam. I heard both programs are overrated and don’t help much on applications since they’re not competitive.

Hey guys! So I got this same fancy blue and silver letter just as you all did, and immediately thought that this means I am a magical genius and am off to a glamorous week in a big city full of adorable, Instagram-worthy pictures by trees and what not. No, I did not think of the part where we have to learn or actually be considering a career in medicine thank you very much. Anyways, I applied and got accepted (I am still pondering how I managed to fool these administrators) regardless, I have a LOT of questions! The itinerary is rather vague, alike the dress code. Hopefully we’ll all be receiving more info soon! But I’m rather excited strangely enough, I’m also from the midwest; you guys all seem nice I have been super worried I wouldn’t make friends! I happen to be feeling a bit out of place for this as I’m a cheerleader and maybe, kind of, sort of, a wee bit shallow… But regardless I’m going so I hope to see all you guys soon!

Anyone going?

Here right now actually just curious to see if anybody else is, and if anybody replies haha it would be interesting to see who came and if we actually have met each other already
