Brandeis vs Muhlenberg

I am planning to apply to either Brandeis Univeristy or Muhlenberg college Early Decision. I plan to take pre dental classes and major in Business. However my ultimate goal is to go to dental school, so I was wondering which school would be better for me to apply too based on what I want to study and based on my goal which is getting into dental school? Any other help or advice about this topic would be appreciated.

The two schools both have significant Jewish communities, a friendly vibe and a suburban location. Otherwise, they seem totally different from each other. Have you visited both schools?

If you aren’t madly head over heels in love with one of the schools, you shouldn’t be applying ED.

I am going to slightly disagree with slitheytove in that both schools take a large percentage ED - it will really improve your chances. Also - Brandeis offers ED I and ED II and Muhlenberg offers a rolling ED with a final ED deadline of Feb. 15th - so I would suggest picking your favorite and applying ED. If you don’t get in - you should have time to apply ED to the other one. For example, if you apply ED I to Brandeis and find out in December that you are deferred or rejected - you still have plenty of time to apply ED to Muhlenberg.

Obviously you should have visited both schools and determined your gut preference between the two. Also - please consider the financial picture - it really is not a great idea to apply to a binding ED program if you need FA.

But to me - the 2 schools have enough in common that I could see someone really liking both - and it makes sense to me to apply ED to improve your chances, as long as finances are ok.

SlitheyTove - your advice about not applying ED unless you love the school makes sense - but I see lots of kids who vacillate between ED at 2 different schools until the last minute - or who can’t decide whether or not to go ED - I think it is used more and more as an admissions strategy - and less so because a student is just in love with one particular school. I think the colleges are adding to this by offering more than one ED date - colleges want to improve their yield and lock up part of the incoming class - in return - it is easier to be accepted ED.

Since you are planning to apply to Dental School, you need to remember that Dental School is very expensive. There are no merit scholarships. You will be entering a field that could make you a comfortable living and pay back your student debt load easily…or not. Please do not ignore the potential to compare financial aid packages or merit aid offers by applying ED. Both Muhlenberg and Brandeis have good potential to get you into Dental School.

I have visited both. I liked Muhlenberg better because it was more friendly and the people were closer. However Brandeis is definitely a better academic school. I am just not sure how much it matters for getting into dental school between going to a school like Brandeis or Muhlenberg?

OP - you should already know this if you have researched both schools - but in case you don’t - Muhlenberg has an early assurance program in dentistry with Penn. I would suggest contacting their health professions advising dept. for more info.

DOES MUHLENBERG COLLEGE HAVE ANY EARLY ASSURANCE PROGRAMS?
Muhlenberg College does indeed, have four such programs; the first is with Drexel University College of Medicine for students interested in allopathic medicine; the second with University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine for students interested in dentistry; the third with SUNY College of Optometry for students interested in optometry, and the fourth with Jefferson College of Health Professions for students interested in PT and OT.

tennidanlak, Muhlenberg does a great job with getting students into premed, and there’s that great dental program that rockvillemom discovered. Certainly you shouldn’t apply ED to Brandeis: you like Muhlenberg better, so it would be foolish to apply ED elsewhere.

Have you and your parents had the money talk about how much they can afford to pay? If they’ve said that they can afford to pay any amount, then the only thing you need to worry about is if you might change your mind about where you want to go to school between now and May. If you are looking at different schools and need to compare financial aid or merit aid offers, ED to either school wouldn’t be a good decision. Muhlenberg does give some preference for merit aid to ED applicants, but applying ED means you can’t compare offers. It doesn’t sound as if Muhlenberg is a reach for you. If your stats are high enough, you wouldn’t need the admissions boost from ED.

I liked both schools but liked Muhlenberg better. The thing is I have to apply ED because of a certain circumstance. The dental program at Muhlenberg/Upenn is out of reach for me because I dont think I have the grades for it. Fiinancialy I am fine however I would definitely like to recieve some money. Would anyone know which school is better for majoring in Business?
