Brandeis?

I went to the school last month, but did not get a good idea about the theater program. I was told by an admissions woman that you can major in Musical Theater through the Music department or through the theater department, and both are for a BA. They also were VERY supportive of a double major, maybe even a triple!

Does anyone have any other information about Brandeis?

I’ll assume that you’re interested in an excellent liberal arts education as well as a first-rate Theater Arts program. That gives you academic options during college and hedges your bets post graduation in the event a career in the theater does not pan out. If that’s the case, Brandeis is an excellent option that would give you both first-rate theater opportunities and a first-rate educational experience.

Brandeis is a top-tier, exciting intellectual and creative environment inside and outside the classroom. That well-rounded and challenging liberal arts education is what has produced such renowned theater and film industry alumni as actresses Debra Messing (“Will and Grace”), Robin Weigert (HBO’s “Deadwood”), Lorretta Devine (Broadway’s "Dream Girl"s, TV’s “Grey’s Anatomy”), Gates McFadden (Dr. Beverly Crusher–“Star Trek TNG”, Tyne Daly (“Cagney and Lacey”) and Louise Lasser, plus creators/producers Marta Kaufman and David Crane (“Friends”), TV producer Gary David Golberg (“Family Ties”) and Tony-Award-Winning producer Robyn Goodman (“Avenue Q,” “In the Heights,” “Westside Story”) to name a few.

Not only will there be opportunities for you as an undergraduate in the Theater Department and with the resident Brandeis Theater Company, but the Undergraduate Theater Collective puts on numerous musicals each year as well. If you haven’t seen their website, here’s the link:

Also, here’s the link to the Brandeis Theater Company site:

Forgive my enthusiasm, but I’m an alum who experienced theater at Brandeis first hand. Although I didn’t become a theater professional, I still participate avocationally and even semi-professionally. It’s an amazing school.

Good luck with your decision!

I happen to think that Brandeis is an excellent option for a very strong student who wants to do MT in a BA liberal arts setting. It has a very strong theater department with a MT track option. I had a student apply there last year for MT and got in but chose Northwestern instead (also got into BFA programs). If you want a BA, there are not a lot of them that offer a MT concentration, and are in academically selective universities. Brandeis fits that for those who want that.

I’ve heard rumors that they cut part of the M.F.A. program. I only bring this up because it’s important to ask what has changed in the mission of the program. Could be that they were completely separate and there is no effect. But it’s worth a question.

The articles that I have read are about proposals to phase out the MFA program in Theater Design and do not affect the MFA in Acting, nor the undergraduate theater program.
