Brazilian student with low GPA.

Hello! I hope you guys help me.

I don't know my exact GPA but my average is 80% higher on classes that I need more for my major and lower on the others.

I wonder if I could explain to the university the reasons for my low grades. I studied in Portugal up to the 9th grade. Until 7th grade my grades where really good, average 90% above. After that I fell into depression and my grades lowered to an 75%-80%. I was always among top 5 of my classes in Portugal.

Further, I came back to Brazil trying to heal myself. I did the 1st year of High School in a private school, really good. My scores were about 80-85% and I was one of the best students. However, my last year I went to the worst school ever. A public school in a small city. This was a shock for me. The education quality and students level of knowleadge were so low that I felt unmotivated and kind threw things away. My average was 80% and even though I consider this low, believe or not, I was the best student of my class.

Now I willing for study hard and do whatever I need to get into a good college in US. I fell like this is the only way to really unleash all my potential.

My TOEFL score is 104 and I'm aiming for a 2000 above SAT.

What are my chances, and in which colleges?

Thanks.

Two things: what’s your budget for college? Also, what’s your intended major?

Actually my brother-in-law is millionaire and he offered to pay any college I want. And my intended major is biotechnology or bioengineering, in thruth I’m not sure yet. But don’t we have two years to choose?

You can get into some great state schools like UIUC as a full-pay international with a 2000+ SAT. I wouldn’t sweat it. You are VERY lucky that your brother-in-law has offered to pay tuition because you would otherwise be… in trouble. I would thank him profusely after he signs the check.
