Breadth and Depth?

I will be a freshman in Pratt in the fall, and I've only vaguely heard of Breadth and Depth requirement. Since I will be taking writing 20 in the spring, I have to take a social science or humanities elective in the fall, and I'm kind of stumped on what to take. Can anyone give examples of what classes they took? I'm doing pre-med, so I'll have to take another English beside writing 20 (not sure what to take either.......) For the rest, could I take all foreign languages? I'm kind of thinking about learning Latin.

Also, is there anyone who did BME and pre-med here with a 5 on AP Chem? What chemistry class did you take in the fall of your freshman year? I was going to take Chem 43, then Chem 151 and 152 later (for 2 courses in general/orgo chem if you counted the AP credit), but then someone told me I should take Chem 151, which I don't understand. Please help, I'm really confused.

I am a BME alum/premed with AP Chem credit so my info may be outdated but here’s what I know:

1) As a BME you are required to take 2 chem courses of which AP Chem counts for one. 43 I believe would substitute for AP Chem so there is probably no advantage to you taking it again unless you absolutely need the refresher.

2) As a premed, you need to take 151/152 and I would strongly advise biochem because more and more schools are starting to require it beginning this year (eg Harvard, Cornell, Hopkins, in addition to Duke).

3) As a premed, you will also need a full year of gen chem which means the best way for you to fulfill both BME and premed requirements is probably to take Chem 32 after 151/152.

So my advice is to take 43 only if you need a refresher. If not, take 151/152 your freshmen year. Then taken chem 32 sophomore year. Finally take Biochem junior fall. This sequence is likely the minimum number of chem courses you’ll need as a BME/Premed without repeating anything and still be able to cover all your anticipated requirements.

Thank you for the info, it’s very helpful. I think I’ll take 151 for chem. By the way, which ss/h classes did you take? I still don’t know what I’m going to take in the fall. I’m not very interested in those areas anyway, so I’m looking for fun/easy classes.

I have no idea what SS/H classes are still available but to categorically say that you don’t like “those areas” would be doing yourself a disservice. There are many interesting courses in SS/H that give completely different perspectives to engineering. You should take advantage of things outside of your areas of knowledge to broaden your horizon, I know my SS/H courses definitely helped me with that.

I usually only like ss/h classes if my teachers are good, so I’m looking for classes with good professors. For pre-med, 2 english classes are required, so for the other class (beside writing 20), is any english class ok or is there a specific one?

I’m still looking at the list of courses. Has anyone taken ENGLISH 90AS Readings in Genre, or had Melissa Malouf?
