Breakdown by state

Is there a breakdown of the student body by state or region? I notice some schools have a map with the number from each state. I know a significant percentage are from CA but wondering about geographical/international representation and could not find it on the website. Thanks.

Yeah, I could use the breakdown as well.

I have never seen a breakdown by state, but it seems like almost everyone is from California or Texas. I believe every state is represented. There are only 5 of us from Kentucky. Small states may have a better chance, but they say the number represent the applicant. About half of their applications come from CA, and as a result slightly less than half of each class comes from CA.

I definitely wouldn't say that "almost everyone" is from California or Texas. In my dorm last year, for example, there were people from New York, Kansas, Hawaii, Oregon, Florida, and more. Every state and many other countries are represented at Stanford. True, there may be only a small handful of students from a particular state other than California or Texas, but it's not as if only 10% of the student population is from another location.

I'm trying to find the statistics now, but I'm unsuccessful... I will update if I find them.

I found some abbreviated admissions (not matriculation) stats:

California — with more than 958 students admitted — is the most represented state in the admission pool, while Texas (147) and New York (107) are second and third.

South Korea, with 35 admits, is the most represented foreign country. Singapore (18) and Canada (17) are second and third, according to the press release.

Total admitted: 2,465

This is the closest thing I can find for matriculation statistics http://www.stanford.edu/home/stanford/facts/undergraduate.html

thanks celestial - sorry, I didn't mean to say that there aren't people from other places. I definitely appreciate the diversity at Stanford. I actually have a bunch of international friends, in addition to many from around here.

I think the diversity here is great, too :) That's why I was so quick to jump in and highlight the fact that we do have diversity. It's so interesting to me to hear about people's experiences, whether they're from Nebraska, Canada, Thailand, New Jersey, or Arizona. Some people have done research since middle school, and others are nationally-ranked athletes. People have done such different things in their lives, and yet they're nice, welcoming people who want to get to know you. I thought that people at my high school were very different from each other, but now that I'm in college, I'm astounded at how much else there is to do in the world that I never even considered. Very cool.
